2005 100k Mile Checkup

My 2005 2WD recently turned 100k miles. Maintenance (oil, trans, rear end, filters) has been performed religiously. I plan on changing out the water pump, belt, radiator hoses, thermostat, and pulleys just as a preventative measure. Is there anything I am missing or have overlooked? Thanks, Ed B

You didn't mention it but I assume you plan to change coolant when you replace thermostat and hoses.

Brake fluid should probably be changed. Over time it absorbs moisture.

If it were me, I would not change out the water pump, some will go for years without fail. If you do change it, make sure it is the same as your oem. Some aftermarket pumps with more flow can compromise your heater core. As far as pulleys??

One caution, the rad petcock. Many issues possible, it backs out but then will not tighten. I did it and had major frustration getting it to tighten. It is two pc construction and the plug nut in the end cap just keeps turning and turning.



Suggestion from a TDR member was not to even open it, just siphon out and proceede.



I did get mine to catch and I ordered a replacement which took SEVERAL months to get.



IF you remove petcock, just loosen enough to get some flow, if you back it out too far and it will not screw back in, this is what I did.



Remove plug nut from end cap, jut pull on the petcock wings, straight out while still screwed in a bit.



Take the petcock screw and turn it in just to where the shoulder of the screw makes first contact with the plug nut. Now, carefullt insert this as an assembly into the rectangular hole in the tank. Try turning the petcock in.



I think what happend to me is that the screw tried to force into the plug nut, but it just kept on turning and turning.

I change out the coolant every 24 months about 66K avg. , I have had no problem w/the petcock but have also found it far quicker to just remove/replace the lower hose. I put a large rectangular plastic storage tub under it and just let it flow with very little mess to wipe up. Last spring I was at 245K and had to change my pump, 7 years worth of daily 100+ miles driving, I also did the belt w/a HD Gates, top hose and T-stat too. Also did the 3/4" hoses on the heat exchanger, I'm going to do the other two 3/4" hoses soon.



You indicated "oil,trans,rear and filters". Have you done those regularly or is it the first time now at 100K ?



I do oil, both fuel filters, clean the air filter, grease, at 10K, trans and filter every other oil change, front/rear axles every 12 -18 months

man... should I feel bad for my truck or what... Never have put any coolant in it, done the diffs once @ 10K miles and have never checked them again, Did the trans about a year ago, never have checked/added brake fluid, power steering fluid.
But, I DID fill the washer fluid up about 6 months ago along with some new wiper blades!

Well when you only have 16,240 miles on it why would you do anything else. . :-laf

True. . mine has around 50K... it spends its life sitting inside my shop along side a VERY low hour Kubota L4400

2013's are going to a 10 year coolant... ... ... but no plastic intakes:-laf
