I have a loud noise comming from the transmission as soon as it changes into fourth gear. It sounds like a bad bearing. I have a banks system and by using it to tell what gear it's in I know it's fourth gear. As soon as it changes from 3rd to 4th the noise appears and as soon as it changes from 4th to 3rd it disappears. Talking to some people they say it's a torrington bearing in the tailshaft. Has anyone had this problem?

2005 98000 miles changed fluid and filter nothing in pan fluid a little dark

Adjusted bands. Would recomend to everyone to keep bands adjusted.

48RE Noise

I repaired my transmission and had I not been sold the wrong part it would have been so easy. The bearing in the rear of the OD housing had spun and wore the housing beyond use. I went to a transmission supply house and purchased a used housing and a bearing. I thought I looked this housing over good and i did see on top it said 99/2000 but it looked the same and all the parts fit. I believe it changed in 04. 5. the inside where the parking pawl is has been beefed up and the parking pawl is larger. You will also need a line up tool for the splines and a tool to compress the 800LB spring so you can take it apart. I also had a problem with aligning the splines because the tool I was using was worn to bad and would leave them unaligned just enough it would not go together. Last time I aligned it by sight. It took me approx 1 hour to put it back and install all other parts and drive away. This was a great learning experience for me and now I could do it in my sleep. After adjusting both bands and fixing this bad bearing it is working great.

You need to check for any type of vibration,If you have shudder or any type, B/C it will crack the NEW Housing. Adjusting the Bands is temporarily a fix, if they were WAY OUT of spec,You only added time Before complete R/R.

I did check for vibrations and the reason I probaly got by without a rebuild is when the noise started I parked it until I had time to repair it. All the clutches, steels and all other parts were in excelent shape. I did replace the torrington bearings while I was in there.

If I need to rebuild later its ok I had myself one learning experience.
