2005 5. 9CTD 2WD SLT information, please!

Hey folks!

I found a 2005 5. 9 CTD 2WD LB SLT with 10,400 miles. I know the mileage is true because with a little detective work I found that the truck belonged to a neighbor of my ex-boss. After sitting last winter when he had heart trouble/surgery he decided to trade it off. I had a long chat with him, but he didn’t remember much of the technical information.

This is where I need your expert help-

- Are the CA emissions different from the 49 state emissions for 2005-year diesel PU?

- Is there a web site where I can enter the VIN# to find out the GCVWR, maximum towing capacity, maximum payload capacity, axle ratio etc? The salesman/business mgr. thinks that is a 20,000# GCVWR and a 4:10 ratio, before I spend the money I would like to see it in writing though. The dealer entered the VIN # into his program and printed an options list, however it doesn’t say anything about the gear ratio, max. weight limits etc.

- It has 265/70R 17 tires (I forgot to check the ply rating) and a 11. 5 rear axle. Would this be indicative of the 20,000# GCVWR?

- What is the HP and TQ?

- Does this year have the hydraulic controlled viscous fan clutch"

Of general interest to me.

- What is the basic difference (if any) between the ‘05, ’06, ’07s with the 5. 9 diesel?

- Will my flow through dropped center 2nd gen. tailgate fit the 3rd gen. ?

- What is Cargo Box Tracking?

- On the 2nd gen. there is a hole in the firewall above the brake pedal that is plugged with a rubber grommet that was perfect for threading wires/co-axial through for the CB etc. Does this hole exist on the 3rd gen?

- What is Toluca painted cargo box?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Richard

May you have fair winds and following seas!

When I bought my used 2003 I went to daimlerchrysler.com ,sent vin info and got a copy of the original window sticker. It shows everthing on and in the truck when built.

I can possibly answer a couple of questions.

Your tailgate won't fit. Not even close.

The '06 and '07 automatic is rated for an exhaust brake and has a dual function button on the selector. One push toggles between tow haul and regular mode. Two quick pushes toggles OD lockout.

The '04 automatic will lock out the OD in tow haul mode.

The '05 has a complicated and unpublished logic used to shift out of OD. There is no OD lockout. (I put a BD EBrake and Torquelock on my '05 and had to figure out how to make it all work on my own)

Power and Torque are gut wrentching, no need to chip this engine unless you really want to. I believe emissions are 50 state but you need to check that.

Hope this helps. If you pass on this one, I am thinking about upgrading and would consider selling my '05. (18K mi and loaded Laramie).

It is 50 state emmissions compliant, no special CA version in '05. The HP is 325 the torque is 610 as are all '05,'06 and '07 5. 9s.

Which transmission? Manual or auto? Which model 2500 or 3500? Single rear wheel or dually? All of those play into the CGVWR and help determine which rear gears you have. I would bet that more than likely it has 3. 73's, that was the only ratio for the G56 manual trans.

If it is an auto trans there is a nice grommet where the clutch slave would go. Otherwise it is still pretty easy to fish lines through in other spots.

I am guessing about the GVWR but I think they are all above 20k at 22 or 23k.

Thanks everybody for the replies, I sure appreciate you comments!

The transmission is an 2500, auto, SRW

I logged on daimlerchrysler.com but was unable to find where I could enter the VIN and get the “build/option” information. I then called them on their 800# and was informed that unless I was the registered owner that information was not available. This I don’t understand, the vehicle has Cummins, Big Horn and SLT emblems on it so some of the options are visible to the most casual observer. Oh well!

With the VIN she could give me the following though- GVWR 8800#, towing capacity 13,250#, GCVWR 20,000#, differential ratio 3. 73, 325HP and 610TQ.

JSchooley-

What do you mean? “I put a BD EBrake and Torquelock on my '05 and had to figure out how to make it all work on my own” What problems did you have? The BD brake etc that I installed on my ’98 has operated without fail for about 200,000 miles. So I am planning on installing the same BD Ebrake etc as you did on this ’05 if I get it.

When you say that there isn’t a OD lockout, if you move the gear selector to the 3 gear position won’t that lock it in 3rd?

My wife and I took it for a drive the other day WE KNOW what you mean when you say- “Power and Torque are gut wrentching”

Richard,

There is 1,2 and Drive: no 3. I asked Dodge what the logic was and they said it was the same as the '03 and '04, but if you search the posts on this site you will find the '05 to have a different shifting logic and cannot be locked out of OD.

Also the '05 apparently has higher valve body pressure, especially in the Tow Haul mode. Shifts are very crisp which is good for reliability but under some situations can be a little severe.

I have the BD brake on my "01 HO and love it. I tried a PAC Brake on my '05 and returned it (Great buy from camping world). I turned around and installed the BD package on the '05. It works great ------ Except:

To get good retardation you have to get the truck out of OD and into lock-up. There are two ways. First if you have cruise control set, foot off throttle and gain 5mph over set speed it will shift out of OD and relock. Second if you are not in cruise control, not in Tow Haul, foot off the throttle and engage Tow Haul it will shift out of OD and relock. If you touch the throttle it will shift back into OD.

If you shift down to second gear it may or may not go into lockup. The BD Torquelock will insure lockup when it is engaged and then you can command on the EBrake. I guarantee that will slow you down on the steepest of hills!! Of course within the RPM limits of the engine.

Once you get the hang of it I think it is a good towing package that has better reliability than anything previous.

I chipped my '01 HO so i can keep up with traffic going up the Cajon Pass out of the L. A. basin towing my 5th wheel. I think my '05 has about the same power stock.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
