So I took truck to the dealer for normal service work and mentioned that the trans hunts when cold between 1-2-1... sometimes. Service guy calls me back and said trans is slipping shifting into 2nd. They have to tear into it to find the problem. I only have 24,500 mile on this truck and occasionally tow a 10,000lbs. 5th wheel. What did I do wrong? Still under warranty but I'm a little paranoid.

I've got an 05 that does the same thing. This sounds like a common issue and aftermarket companies are making products to fix this. I was told to keep driving it and it was normal (gear hunting not slipping). So far no transmission troubles and i've got the same mileage as you. Keep me posted as to what they find.

I have an '05 auto with about the same mileage as well. I have the 1-2 hunting too. It seems to do it under mild power. When I mash the right pedal it finds a gear and stays there, but when I'm idling along through town it seems to hunt.

Recently though my transmission seems to be slipping a bit. I started running in tow/haul to firm up the shifts. I was told the bands probably need tightening. Maybe when the develop the new transmission software for the exhaust brake compatability they'll fix the hunting problem. I'm holding my breath...

I had the same problem. I started noticing it at about the same mileage, 20,000, ( i now have 45,000 on it ) the dealer said nothing wrong drive it. It was particularly noticeable while towing my work trailer, about 6,000lbs. I would take my truck and trailer to the dealer, but there was no hills around them to demonstrate what was going on. They did the pressure solenoid TSB, it help the shifts, but I was still setting the trans temp alarm off pulling steep grades at a crawl. I switched dealers again,( #3 ), they did all their test and check the programing and updated it, said all was with in specs. They pulled the pan to address the coming out of park hard issue, found the metal and debris and said rebuild time. Apparently the torque converter came apart, burnt first, second, and third clutches and bands. And the valve body was bad as well, ( had problems getting out of park ). I was asked how long I had been finding metal and coffee grounds looking material in my pan. I had been changing my fluid and filter every 7,500 miles due to finding the debris at 22,500 mile service and suspected burnt fluid. The coffee grounds looking stuff is from the converter coming apart. All seems to be well now, firm shifts, I don't see the higher RPMs I used to see, and just a more solid feeling in the lower gears, but I still set the temp alarm off on this one hill I have to come up from this job sight ( 10% grade for . 3 of a mile, rough, and from a standing stop). They are checking with Star for any information on it, and advised me to relocate my transmission gauge sender to the out flow line to the cooler and advise them what the temp is when it goes off, where I had it ( in the pan ), showed that the cooler was doing it's job. The highest temp I had ever seen before was 195*. I just recieved my adapter from Geno's, and installed it last week. we will see what is going on now.

I have the hunting issues too. 04. 5, I've read where some dealers have turned up the pump pressure and helped eliminate the problem.

Isn't a real pain in the back end when you try to tell the dealer something is wroung but unless your pulling a load it acts normal. I have had that" it seems to be fine" call toany times.

Well, I set the trans temp alarm off again ( 3rd time since rebuild ). Temp coming from the trans going to the engine cooler was about 128*. I have a couple of hills I can set it off at will. I have to work at the bottom of one of them right now. The temp did eventually climb to around 190*-195*, but that was after I hit the plateau and it leveled off and I was about a mile down the road. My sender is now mounted approximately 2" from the transmission on the out going line. Couldn't get any closer due to the bend in the line. I called the dealer and talked to the tech, he said that is not right. He is checking into it with the tech line. Also, my transmission is starting to shudder again, I have about 1,500 miles on the rebuild. I guess we will see:rolleyes:

I hate to be the guy who complains about what everyone is complaining about but my 05 has had the 1-2-1-2 or 1-3-2-3-2-3 shift problem almost from the day I bought it in January of 05 and my dealer says "that is normal for this transmission". Do they really think that we believe the engineers designed this thing to shift like that?

GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!!!!!#@$%!

Ok I'm back now, I have told them about DTT and Suncoast working on this just so they would believe me that this is a "REAL" problem and not a dream.

Some trucks do it and some don't. My brother-in-law has a 06 and his shifts great.

Truth be known it is a little . 10 cent part that will cost big $$$ to fix it and they just hope all of us would pretend that or trucks shifted like they do when we take them in and they "can not duplicate the problem".

Lets see, 3 years is a long time to dream the same problem.

Mabe we just need counseling.

Have the done the pressure solenoid TSB #21-009-07, if not have them do it. It helped mine considerably. My dealer had no clue, until I gave him the #. Thank You TDR!!!!

My dealer called tonight... ... ... ... . trucks done. Advisor said they did a complete rebuild of the transmission. We will see.

Rick

I gave them that number today and they were supposed to call me back today after the tech checked out the TSB but they did not call me back. I guess they were too busy to get to it to see what it said to do or to call me back.

I hate to but it's looking like I might have to go show my butt to get this fixed but I hate to that because it's ONLY been 3 years now. #@$%!

Any service tech's out there?

I'm attaching the copies of my RO for the trans overhaul.

Any tech's out there who can take a look and tell me what they did?

Trans seems to shift much better, no lag or slipping. I will know more when I drag the 5th wheel home on Monday.

Thanks for looking.

Looks like they put in front band, clutch retainer that the band goes around, converter, seals, and the solenoid that the TSB calls out for the hunting shift. I'm not familiar with the seal package, but I do not believe it includes clutches. I highly doubt the clutches were burned, just the front band. It is the one that can get loose and contribute to the hunting shift. Looks like your good to go again.
