Years ago I worked for the largest re-manufacture of aftermarket staters and alternators in the US and that oem manufactures would use the same unit in different applications with the only amp difference being the pulley size.

Same concept as under drive pulleys you see for the 5. 0's and other gassers.

I bet if you were to get a lager pulley you would get what you want. Plus our trucks were stock with a 130amp unit. These rated at idle when they rate them. It is around a 3:1 rating. Motor 1000 rpm unit is 3000 rpm.

If you want a bigger unit pm me and my buddy owns pa performance, they do customer alternators for 5. 0 and other cars. . I can look into what a pulley can do and get you one. A pulley only $10-15. .

On a side note, 130 amp is a very conservative rating. . I sure it is higher.

A place on ebay sells brand new units at decent prices. It says warranty but then says not if used on diesels, though the auction is specifically for Ram Diesel trucks. Anyhow they are 205A for 229. 00 and he has 175A for around 159. 00 maybe 179. 00 but still not a bad price from what I have seen others go for.

I'm no expert here, this is the first I've heard of changing the pully for more amps but wouldn't you want the alt. to spin faster for more amps (smaller pulley)? Sounds like this may help me as well, I draw plenty of juice when I've got all 4 of my big lights on with the headlights, stereo crankin... It hasn't been a problem at cruising speeds but it could be while going slower through the bush.

Thanks

Mike

I think in 01, the 160 amp alternator came with the snow plow prep group. I think it would be the same for the 02. Why not try to get that alternator in stead of the one for the 05 Power Wagon?

good call out

Bigger of smaller, I forget but I think your right. GM was very big in offering one unit for 5 different car's with the only difference being pulley size that would dictate amp output. With 2 batteries I never worry about it. just my . 02. .

I called 2 different dealers & was told no 160 amp alternator in 01 or 02, snow plow package or not.....

I looked at an 05 Power Wagon & the 160 amp alternator is a Denso. it looks like it has 4 mounting legs. It was 105 degrees (where's the snow), so I didn't look for too long. It looks nothing like my 136 amp alternator.

It would take a smaller pulley to drive the alt faster.

But, i'm pretty sure the regulator keeps the output level no-matter how fast the altenator turns.
