They said my cylinders were scuffed due to a lean condtion caused by a chip. Rich I could see not lean  D. C. did not know I had a chip but because I blew up a plastic intercooler 3 months ago I must have had a chip in there. According to them this the only way you can blow up one of these intercoolers. I am just letting you guys know all this so you can be warned ahead of time. This is going to be a expensive lesson for me.

I have heard of the plastic tanks failing under all stock conditions.

Were you running a chip? They CAN tell if you're truck fuel timings/pressures have been altered out of oem parameters.

I was running a chip and I will again. As for the tanks they have been testing them and found they could not blow one up in stock form.

the dealership might not have blown one in stock form, but I can assure you they have been blown. Cummins blew them on stock trucks that they were road testing. That's why D/C had to go back to metal tanks. If the plastic didn't fail, they would have stayed with them.

As far as I know I have had the only intercooler failure at this dealership. The report from the D. C. tech to the dealer basically stated that Cummins thought they had a problem with the intercoolers and after a lenghthy test period determined that the only way the intercoolers failed is in a overboost condition. Now all intercoolers are going to be plastic again.

That tech apparently doesn't know what has been going on around the CTD community then. I have read about ppl's oem plastic tanks failing and not being over boost problems. There is a known problem with boost spikes that cause the tanks to blow. Maybe this was on the early produciton run of the tanks. But it is a known issue.

It was my understanding that this is D. C. 's and Cummins new official stand. Plastic tanks are now going back into circulation.

What am I missing here??

You've got a sub-13 sec. , bombed to hell truck, and you're suprised you've lost your warranty?

BTW, congratulations on the 1/4 mile time.

dc dropped the plastic mid 05 to go back to aluminum tanks... unless now they went back to plastic on the 06's, but i don't think they did...

um, diesels engines are all lean burn engines... under heavy load overfueling they might get to 10:1, and at leanest [sp?], they run ∞:1, and you can't get any more lean than that...

I don't think I would argue if I nuke mine and I am running very close to the same mods. I wish I were at the same ET. That is a very good time if on #2 only.

See if you have a service that repairs big staionary rigs. Use to use a guy that had a portable bore machine. Could bore in frame(small cars also)mic and fit the new pistons etc. We'd pull head, pan, pistons a rods. He'd bore, mic etc. match ech cyl. We'd clean and reassembly. never pull the engine. New rod bearings etc.

The chip caused a lean condition... . hmmmm. This tech gets a gold star for dufus of the month. Go back and tell him the chip had nothing to do with it. The problem is the factory installed too small of main jet in the carbeurator and had the distributor way too far advanced. yahhh. thats it.

Im not really arguing that they should warranty it seeing as you are running 12 sec 1/4 miles with it, and that obviously is pushing it outside what they designed it for. But dang, they should at least educate their "diesel" techs a little more than that.

What would cause this? Dirt? Loss of oil on piston skirt during high RPM use? Could EGT cause the pistion to expand and scuff the cylender? I recall forged pistion (like size in 300cc motorcycles) would expand over . 005" when heated to operating temps.

Yeah, the old cold seize trick. When in high school I let some goof ( my brother)ride my 250 honda one time. Water cooled bike cold weather, he jumps on starts it, and imediatly rode the crap out of it. No thermostat = cylinder still cold, piston grows and screeeech. stuck it. bummer for me. I beat the crap out of him for that  :-laf

I was not surprised at all that they did not warranty it. They don't even know what caused it yet. They say it either got dusted or it was a lean condition caused by the chip. Either way it is my problem. If it was dusted it is my own fault for using a aftermarket fliter. If the pistons stuck it was because of my doing as well. Personally I don't think it was dusted. They are supposed to pull the pistons out today,so I should no tonight.

When you get the pistons out, Look at the crosshatch, If there is crosshatch all the way around the cylinder (except for the damaged areas), It is not dusted. I would also call D. C & tell them If I`m going to loose my warranty, I want a professional to fix it. Not the dip shi* thats working on it now.

Just my . 02, but if the warranty is toast, why the he$$ would you leave it at the dealer anyway. Take it somewhere that knows what they are doing. Oh yeah, and why not upgrade while you are in there ;)

how bad is the scuffing? you could if it isn't too bad use a hone and resurface the cylinder lightly and stuff a new piston and rings in the hole and get her running again...
