My 2005 has a rapid ticking noise with the ignition on but not started. I was told it's the heater grid relays but even when the wait to start light goes out it keeps ticking. The ticking noise will continue as long as the ignition is on no matter how long the ignition is on. It sounds just like a gas engine with a bad spark plug wire arcing.

Does your 2005 do this or is there something else I need to check out?

Mine does it. Always has. I think it's something to do with the injectors. One time I had a juice that shorted out and the truck would'nt start and it was not making that ticking noise.

First point, our trucks don't have an ignition system. Sorry, couldn't resist.

2nd: I think the ticking noise is the fuel pump, but I could be wrong on this one.

ticking noise is not lift pump, I can hear that running coming from the fuel tank. The ticking noise is fromt he engine compartment. I'll bet if I got a piece of pipe and listened through it I could pinpoint where the noise is coming from.

Thought I'd throw this out there too. On the 2005 model's you don't have to bump the starter to make the lift pump run, just turn the ignition on and it's running.

Thanks Bob, Is the electronic fuel control actuator on the CP3 or a seperate unit. The sound seems to be coming from the drivers side.

sound is coming from under the valve cover on mine, always has.

sound like injectores but i dont know where the "fuel actuator" is located.

Can anyone elaborate on why the injectors are doing this? Pretty new to this whole diesel thing and just would like to understand what's going on. I noticed my '03 ticking like mad a few weeks ago with the key on and not running. I figured it was normal and figured it was the injectors but I wasn't sure why they do that.

The injectors are purging any air that might be in them back to the tank. That is one of the reasons you can run a third gen out of fuel, and it starts back up with just a little cranking.
