"For future buyers, I just hope they don't use a concentric slave cylinder mounted on the input shaft!" I was back on the www.media.daimlerchrysler.com. website, and I see they have some photos of the transmission posted. Looks like it has the same slave cylinder arrangement as the NV5600. It also splits apart in the middle(front and rear sections).

That case looks kinda cool. Very clearly designed to minimize weight! Notice you can split it open in the middle... might make rebuilds a little easier. Good news is it obviously doesn't use a concentric slave cylinder (you can see the slave cylinder access port there on the backside of the bell housing). :)

If you look in the dictionary under "getrag" its deffention is "Get a Rag" it is leaking or broken again.

Leaving Dana axles BAD idea

Leaving New Venture also a Bad Idea

I have seen one and heard of anthor output shaft failure but they were on trucks well above 500hp and probably 1200 ft torque, also have seen all the teeth cleaned off counter and main shaft gears but that is no doubt due to a DUMB ARSE operating the truck. The Nv5600 is a very strong trans I think. The newer trucks are getting so Light in the important areas that it is not funny. I think that pic makes that new trans look more DOOTY than heavy!!

Well, certainly you just can't beat nodular iron for strength. In fact, to get the same strength in aluminum you'd have a transmission that actually weighs more than the NV5600. So just from a case standpoint, the new transmission is probably weaker. Good thing about aluminum: no rust.

I was looking at the engine/transmission list at the allpar page and one has me confused. Maybe someone will know what this means?

Who makes a "Aisin" automatic?

Here's the Aisin transmission: http://www.aisin.com/products/auto/drive.html

At one time the Aisin 5-speed automatic was to be used in the Freightliner Business Class medium duty trucks, but I don't know if they ever made it available as a regular production option.

I read some of the test reports on the transmission in medium duty trucks. The test drivers said it was the smoothest and most "driver friendly" automatic transmission they had ever driven.

If I remember correctly, it was originally made in Japan in a joint venture and Toyota may have been one of the partners.

If I remember correctly I bleeive New Venture was under the Diamler Chrysler umbrella, Kinda like Detroit Diesel. I believe New Venture was jsut sold off from Diamler Chrysler a couple months ago. Im pretty sure i read this in Automotive News about 2 months ago. So if theyve dumped new venture it doesnt surprise me they are going with a new transmission. Its probably a cost driven measure, as with everything in the automotive business is.

cost driven, just like dumping dana. Lets dump what doesn't break so we have more repair bills after warranty expires. most people in todays society don't fix their own stuff. And trucks are becoming grocery getters and everyday vehicles for families, these people don't use the trucks as hard and don't wrench on it themselves.

ANd these people dont' demand the reliability and strength that the pickup buyers of 10-20 years ago did

ugh... . the first gen gutrags were worthless. I'd prefer a heavier stick feel to know that the transmission will last the life of the vehicle. I have 81k on my 04. 5 600 now and zero problems from the transmission. I hate to buy an older truck when we purchase another one (or a Ford) but I need one that has strong components all the way through. The best diesel in the world means nothing when your transmission and rearend are in pieces.
