Do I need a fuel filter adapter?

Our 2005 dodge tripped p0299 code, low boost pressure, we checked fuel filter and it needed replacement cleared the code and it was fine for a while. Then one of our guys backed into something and hit the tail pipe while we were out plowing snow. The 5" alum exhaust was cracked right behind the turbo, so we replaced it with stainless 5" cleared code but came back again. Tried putting the truck back to stock setting with the smarty tuner but still trips code. Truck is making a loud wooshing noise under heavy accelleration and has alot of black smoke coming out of tail pipe. Inspected cold side of turbo a little dirty but not too bad. Is this side supposed to be clean? Turbo moves freely and has no slop in movement. I'm thinking it may be an electrical problem but I don't know. Looking for any suggestions.

If you have excessive black smoke and an air noise its a good bet you have a leak in the CAC system somewhere. The early 05's had plastic end tanks on the CAC and they would turn loose. Chekc that and your boots on both sides to make usre you don't just have one rubbed thru.

Keep it simple first. Check/change your air filter. After that, it sounds like you may have damaged the turbo or the housing and the break was at the weak point. Beyond that I can't help. Sorry.

My best guess would be your charge air cooler (intercooler). Like Cerberusiam said, that year had plastic side tanks that would let go under stock conditions and wouldn't put up with tuners much.

truck had a second code p0483, low coolant fan speed

removed k&n air filter - clean

removed intercooler - found blown gasket on plastic end cap pass side

that was one of the problems, the coolant code was from the air leakage of

the intercooler blowing on the coolant fan and slowing it down, pretty sure of that

ordered a new intercooler an all aluminum oem replacement, will be here 2mro, trying to

have the old one fixed at a local radiator shop - going to keep it as a spare

as far as the the dirty cold side of turbo i talked to a guy who has a background in air

filtration and he says that certain air filters will deform under heavy boost, the filter

bends and the air bypasses the filter and lets dirty air into the turbo

the turbo did have some up and down movement on the center shaft, this guy says

it is supposed to have . 025" clearance i think it has a little 2 much so im going to

have it inspected

i hope the turbo is ok but he says with the vehicle starved for air its running rich, hence

all the black smoke, which causes it to run hotter, that cokes the oil, also with dirt

going into the turbo it injects dirt into the intake so it gets into the oil which

apparently is not very good either

ordered an s&b intake and filter and that will be here 2mro also, throwing the k&n in the

trash

Its running "rich" because of the lack of boost, glad you found the problem.

K&N = BAD for Cummins!!!!!!!!!! PERIOD!

Probably the source of the dirty looking compressor. If your lucky it just surface film and di not hurt the rest of the turbo of engine. Luck. :)

installed new alum intercooler, found on ebay for 489. 00, and installed s&b filter and intake system

cleared all codes and truck runs like a scalded dog again!!

haven't had the turbo inspected yet but will have that done early next week

thanks again for the great advice!
