Last week started truck up in a hurry backed out of garage and the engine slightly stumbled but I noticed it. Ran it lightly loaded all week, ran a. c. on Friday.

Yesterday started truck and went out. About 5 mi. from home it started skipping. Not smoking at all... (Tromp on it smokes black, as usual) Engine light has been on for quite some time due to wastegate code i've been ignoring since its been running just fine.

Limped back and pulled P0201 and old P0243 codes.

Truck has 101,000 on it. 3500 6 spd, 4x4, has a Quadzilla? towing box on it was there since I bought the truck 3 years ago... Have had ZERO problems (as usual w/ my dodges) with this truck. . pull 7 ton trailer 2 or three times a week just fine.

So... I read plenty of people have issues w/these injectors. I don't have a scan tool. Oil levels good. . I serviced everything about 1,000m ago. What is the intelligent way to de-bug this?? How do I electrically test injectors to isolate a wiring issue?? What is the best scan tool I should buy if I were to buy one for this truck?? I really would like to stay away from the dealers as they aren't too good around here... .

Thanks in advance,

AN

With the wastegate code you can be running in a "limp" mode . Could be your FCA. Try some 2 stroke oil in the fuel if it smooths out it's your FCA

2005 suddenly skipping contnued

Thanks for the replies.

Checked fuel filter again looked very black and had some sediment... only 1,100 mi on the filter. Not pleased with that discovery... . disconnected chip... . no difference.

Got into the valve cover and ohmed out the injectors. #1 showed infinity. All the rest seemed to be about zero. So I assume the injector/solenoid itself is bad. Dirty fuel looks co-incidental.

So whats the smart thing to do w/ one injector?? Tempted to try and fix the one unless its a sign that they are all "coming of age"!!!

Not sure what the life expectancy of the newer injectors is. For me, it's habit to pull and have all of them bench tested, replace as needed.

most would say replace them all. Chrysler says under warranty replace only the bad one . Agree with Sticks

I have no point of reference with the newer Dodge Injectors. The old style (conception to 2002) it was inexpensive to pull all 6, pop test them and replace/rebuild the worn ones. Powerstrokes on the other hand, the R&R labor and testing procedure was a gamble. It only paid off if no more than 2 were bad. otherwise you may as well buy a whole new set.

I have Powerstrokes coming up on 200,000. Been lucky no injector issues w/them. That motor is such a PIA to work on I can't wait.....
I have no reference on the 05' either. That's why i'm asking you folks.
I have been told the Cummins re-man injectors for the ISB are AWEFUL. I find that odd since I use Cummins RE-Con on all our BIG Engines never had an issue.
I did order one injector from a Bosch shop that I have used to rebuild mechanical pumps. They claim its a Bosch rebuilt for $375. 00.
Three other shops I have dealt with quoted me $650. 00-$690. 00 for these and couldn't tell me WHO re-did them.
But I agree with you the right thing is to pull them all and have them checked. I ordered the one to see if my diagnosis is right and I NEED the truck.
Are people really laying out $4200. 00 for a set of injectors every 100K?? That's incomprehensible to me!

adnach, Usually when the electronic valve goes bad it will default to open and the engine will start knocking.

Dirty fuel will mess up common rail injectors bad.

Extra fuel pressure can crack the valve body.

You can check out TDR advertisers for new or rebuilt injectors.

If you can find a Bosch authorized shop the solenoid can be replaced on the bad injector, thats the indicated problem. If that is the only issue you have I would be tempted to go that route to get back on the road.

Thats low mileage for replacement of the injectors but not unusual with bad fuel and not extra filtration. A new set of injectors should run less than $3k. Contact TC Diesel a vendor her or other DBosch Dealers for a new injector. Remans are a crap shoot at this time.
