I bought a 06 with the 6 sp manual and plan to take the Gear Vendors O/U drive off my 94, 5 sp and put on the new on.

I was wondering if anyone out there is currently running this combination. It has to help when running down the road empty.

I have had this one on my 94 for 6 years and loved it on that truck.

Any one need a real good 94 with only 134K on it?

I have one on a nv5600 and would not go without it. My mpg increase was about 1. 5 so the pay back is long. But the decrease in noise and the gear splitting is worth it by itself.

Check out member JGrefenstette, thread, NEED SOME CONVINCING ADVISE, in the GENERAL DIESEL forum. This member is 16 and trying to convince his dad to let him buy a CTD, and is looking for one to buy.

WA, I've been considering a G/V O/U for a few years. I currently only have the 98. 5 3500 Auotomatic, and I do miss the 2003 6-speed recently sold. The 4 gears with 3:55 ratio really works getting the 40' 5'er going. I'm only interested in pulling power. Are these things really worth 3 grand?

I wish I could drive an automatic unit if another local member (Ct or Mass area)has one.

CT,

The 94 has the 5 speed with the 5th gear nut that will come off if you tow with it. I put on the Gear Vendors unit to be able to tow in 4th in the gear box and engage the GV, which then gave me the same gear raito I had in 5th gear. The wide raito gearing in that transmission also left some big holes in the shift pattern. I used what I will call "three and a half" all the time towing. You can not keep the GV engaged while letting the engine do the braking, that is the death of one. So yes I think they are worth the money. On the 6 sp one will most likely only use it for 6th over to get better mileage when empty, GV does not recommend towing in 6th with the GV on.

anyone added a O/D unit to a 06 auto ?

Has anyone put a O/D on a 06 auto. I had a 97 4x4 with a 5 speed with a O/D , loved it, @ 65 was turning about 1650 rpm's (3. 54 ), my 06 4x4 auto is turning 1700 @ 60 (3. 73) got to think that lower rpm's would have to help on high way fuel mileage. Have looked but have not been able to find any R/P sets other that 4. 10s or 3. 73. Any one have know if my old O/D unit will fit on a 06 ?

I think because the ratio's would be so fast you'd be shifting all the time. As far as the GV unit itself, if you can tow in the lower gears in the transmission and in OD in the GV unit, it's certainly not an input torque consideration. Although, it may be something akin to when low rpm big trucks came out. They changed from an operating range of 1800 or so up to 2100, down to 1600 or so down to 1200 and started having all sorts of drivetrain issues. Seems as though the individual power pulses were too great and the shock issues on the drivetrain caused the clutches / transmission's / drive-lines / rear-ends to fail prematurely. Cure was dampened clutches where the clutch springs absorbed the torque impulses and spread them out before the rest of the drive train ever saw them.

Maybe they do not want you to tow in 6 over because the GV unit generates the hydraulics from the speed of the unit and possibly there is not enough pressure at lower RPM's (and high torque) to keep the thing engaged. Just guessing. I do not recall reading that, but mine was an auto.

I had a GV unit on my 03 3500 auto (4. 10) and loved it! It realy lowered the RPM's and made for a quite ride. Gas milage savings are probably nil, as mentioned. But towing with the 4 speed auto, and splitting 3rd and 4th was excellent.

Don't know if I will get one for the 6 speed yet.

Towing in 6th with the GV

I was looking over the Gear Vendor web site just yesterday. I got the impression that Gear Vendors thought towing in 6th gear might be inappropriate because they thought that 6th gear was "weak".

I know there were some potential issues with the 5th gear in the 5 speeds, but no mention of this weakness was made in the recent TDR review of the new 6 speeds. Just my 2 cents.
