I own a 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 4X4 5. 9 Cummins Diesel, my problem is the Navigation Radio. The Navigation DVD is giving me a message “Disk Error”. The book that came with the truck says that no cleaner can be used. I’ve wiped off any dust on the DVD and there are no scratches on DVD. I know of two other people that have this same Navigation Radio. They are having the same problem, we were wondering if there could be any date stamp message on the DVD to make this happen. All of our units stopped on the same date. Are there other people with this same Navigation Radio having the same problems? Any Comments ?

I'd ask the dealer about that one. For all 3 radios to start showing disc errors on the same day is quite a coincidence. I have the same radio in my '07 and I'm hoping it doesn't "time out" at some point. What disc version are you guys using?

My 08 is going to dealer mid week for same problem disk error . so we will soon see . I will keep you posted on what they do . I have tryed to copy the disk and there is No way to Copy it .

I had the disk error as well. I cleaned the disc on a regular basis before getting the error. NAV Radio was replaced under warranty. I'd like to get an updated disc but refuse to pay the rediculous price from the dealer.

Just an FYI,

I make regular copies of my Nav CD's and keep those in the truck, with the originals tucked away. It works for me, and it may work for you too. Just a thought.

Couple of ideas...

Firstly, I remember a thread a while back about disc read errors in the REC nav units... It was traced to condensation on the lens in the DVD drive due to a leaky cab light letting excess moisture into the vehicle overnights.

Secondly, making backups of the DVD is a great idea, but make sure you're burning onto a DVD+R Dual Layer. I've had good luck with Sony's discs.

Thirdly, if your current disc is wonky, give me a PM and I'll point you to a source for an image of the current nav disc. Though it may take a while to download.

I would llike an upgraded disk too for my 2006, but won't pay their graft and corruptions cost. There will be a loose one out there soon... ... .

I have an 06 with no issues whatsoever (knock on wood). The idea of copying the CD and storing the original is great. I kept the OEM in a safe place and replaced it with a copy with a special program to bypass the speed data so I can manipulate the unit at any speed. :-laf My nave unit thinks the truck is parked all the time.

I had the DVD Navigation Disk Error problem for a few months now and finally was able to fix it. First I created a copy of the factory nav disk using the process I found posed on the chargerforum

NAV Disc Errors (How to fix step by step)

Second, I'd read that often there was either condensation (unlikely where I live) or dust on the laser that no DVD cleaner will get rid of. The suggestion was to use compressed air (a can) to blow out the drive area. I have an air compressor and a blowgun w/these tips that I used

After blowing around in there with both the long tip and the ball inflator tip, the unit would finally read the DVD, allow me to *finally* change off of daylight savings time, and would pull up the nav maps. I am still getting intermittent errors with the copied disk, so I'm going back to the factory disk to see if it's more reliable.

Nevertheless, at least it worked most of the time today and it was NEVER working before. This was much easier and cheaper than buying a new unit or pulling it out to send in for repairs.

Just to follow up - the stock nav disk has been working flawlessly over the last 2 days after blowing out the DVD drive. Aside - it's stupid that they designed the unit to require re-reading the DVD every time you start the vehicle. I'm tempted to pull it apart and see if the DVD can be replaced w/a SD or some other solid state memory. <ugh>

My navigation system is doing the same thing. Phillips Dodge in Ocala, Florida wants 100+ dollars to do a test on the system. The new Radio is $750 plus $149. for a navigation disc. Going to
purchase a good Garmin GPS and forget the factory unit. Radio and DVD still works great.
