2006 Dodge Ram Mega Cab Hd

Took this from another site I sometimes visit. It seems that there is some discussion amongst Dodge plant workers of a true crew cab with extra doors behind it. Let's hope that it's not just rumors and actually will be built...

In December of 2000 I attended a show put on by DC. It was to evaluate different versions of trim for the 02's. They had a half ton with a cab exactly like the one being described. It was drawing lots of attention but they were really mum about it.

The had a half ton crewcab they had on display had full size front doors for the back and 12 inches to the back of the cab. The rear seats were front seats with adjustable backs. I don't remember if it had a moonroof or not.

This is all well and good, but they keep making the bed shorter when they do this. Cab forward is bad enough, but a 3/4 or 1 ton with a 5 foot bed is worthless. May as well make it a monster Durango for all the good it will be for towing 5ers or goosenecks.



Just what we need. A 325hp 600tq grocery getter.



Don't get me wrong, I REALLY want to see/have a full 4 door Dodge truck with an 8' bed and at least 4 of the 6 cylinders in front of the windshield.

I have an 04. 5 2500 4x4 4 door SB on order and here's why I bought it over a ford:



Pulls a 21 foot and it'll see the desert and baja + local driving



- cummins (once they quieted that down so the woman could live with it, she liked it over the ford. Me? On the test driving, at 70, the truck accelerated when I put my foot in it. The ford made noise. Cummins. 'nuff said.



- The wheelbase was almost a foot and half shorter than the ford with a longer short bed ( the bed's are close, I fergit. ) Guess where it came from? 4 doors are great and wasted space is not. I have always thought Dodge had it over ford on the overall proportions of their trucks. The size of the rear cab on the Dodge is perfect. It ain't suppose to haul a soccer team around. 'Course I got no kids and maybe that's what y'all are worried about . That extra wheelbase can be a serious liability.

- this web site. Honest... I spent a month looking at both trucks hard... hell I was lookin' at the ford since last September, and I can pick one of those up on the X plan, which made 'em look all the better. The info on this web site helped turn the tide. Ive been on ford trucks BB for 4 years ( I own a F250 that I'm keeping ).



Conclusion- bigger/more isn't always better (ie- 8 cyl vs 6 cyl )... but will say I saw the the smaller beds ford was putting on on the longer cab 150's... sheeeeeeet... looked like a stinking cat box. If Dodge goes that way, there will be dark years ahead.



The wish list? as stupid as it seems, what they had that should be available... . a power slider on the back window. I'm gonna have to look into that after the suspension... but a moon roof?... really... I'll drive wifey's car fer that

04 short beds are 6'4"

Are the 02 and older shortbeds longer than the 03 and up shortbeds?



A friend of mine went from a 98 quadcab shortbed to an 03 4 door shortbed, he says the truck is the same length with the 03 having a smaller bed.

2nd gens (1994-2002) are 6'8", 3rd gens (2003-present) are 6'4". Dodge rounded that down to 6. 5 and 6. 25 feet, respectively in the catalogs.



2nd gen long beds were actually 8'4", they're now 8'2".

I think a 7' short box would be the ticket. Had one of those on a '78 Jeep J-10.

How about a longer box!

I'd rather see a longer box than a shorter box. A true crew-cab is a must as far as I can see (I have a neighbor looking at new trucks and has ruled out Dodge since, as he says it, "has a glorified extended cab").



I'd love to see either a 10' or a 12' bed option from Dodge with a longer wheel base (200"+).

Yes, and there are times when I miss that 4"! 4" isn't going to make the truck any more difficult to park or maneuver



BUT... ... ... ... .....



it would add to the shipping costs, and that was the rumor I heard why the bed lost 4"

JMHO here, but I don't think I've ever heard an owner of a longbed say, "I wish I would have bought a shortbed," but I've heard many shortbed owners say they sure could use a longbed sometimes. As for me personally, I'd never own a shortbed. To me, an 8' bed is the main reason for owning a full size truck. If it's too long to maneuver in the shopping mall parking lot, then leave it at home and buy a beater small car for $3 grand. The best accessory I've ever bought for my truck is a '88 Honda Civic. Well, that's why each owner has their purpose. Personally, I would never own a long bed. It has nothing to do with being able to park around town or make u-turns at the stoplight (although that's definitely a plus). For me it has more to do with off-road ability, and being able to squeeze through tight places that I wouldn't be able to make it with a long bed, or a $3K beater car. My truck is my "adventure vehicle", able to take me places most people wouldn't dare take a 7K lb vehicle, but with the camper shell and still having the ability to tow a @$$load of weight, I can cover the best of both worlds to a degree that works for me. My '99 took me up and down several muddy/rocky/steep switchback mountain climbs that I wouldn't have even attempted in a LWB truck. We're talking tires 6" from the edge of a 400' drop on loose rocks just to make the turns. Has anyone here been to Las Vegas and taken the gravel road to the top of the tallest radio tower hill on the northeast of town? It took about 2 hours to go about 3 miles, but the view while looking over the city from the comfort of our plush sleeping quarters was quite rewarding... certainly not worth giving up so that I can have a long bed that can pull a 5'er... since I have no need to pull a 5'er. To each his own... SWB forever

i am one who has a LB and now wish i had the SB, not just for manuverability reasons(although this is a huge factor) but i like the looks better on a SWB. i will state this however, this wknd i purchased to storm doors that were 81" long, and just threw them in the box shut the gate and go it was a very nice experience to do that. wouldn't of been able to do that on a short bed.

Actually, before all the SBs are POed, I think the SB look sharp. But the LB are way more utilitarian - and that's my middle name.

I didn't know this was going to turn into a longbed/shortbed thing... and in defense of LBer's, I should mention that I have a '72 3/4t ford with a 460 that I put a 9' stake bed on with a hydraulic dump for all the grunt work. If I had to worry about utility, I might have gone with the LB... but the SB does look sharp and manuveres better.
