Looking at a 2006 Dually with Auto Trans. Been out of the loop for a while. Is this a 4 or 5 speed transmission.

Any known problems with the transmission with stock power.

Speaking of power, what was the engine HP and Torque for the engine in 2006.

Quick responses would be appreciated. TIA

Vince

The Trans is the 48re, a 4 speed. Engine is rated 325 hp and 610 torque. Most of the bugs were worked out of the tran and it was the only year that dodge rated it for an e brake. I have 75000 miles on mine, tran shop thought I had about 10 k left on it before failure. Up until that time it was completely stock and occasionally towed 12k. Never hot rodded. Most others have had much better luck with theirs. Motor is great with better fuel economy than the 6. 7 and does not have all the emissions hardware under the truck. just my . 02.

the thing I noticed most from my 01' was the first time you push the button in you are in tow/haul and the 2nd time you push the button in you are in OD/lockout

the tow haul seems to change the lockup in the trans. , I've read where several people run tow/haul in town, even when empty as they like the shift pattern better

I believe the transmission is a improvement over the old 47re although it is nothing compared to the 6-speed auto in my wife's megacab

keep it serviced and the truck stock and you should ge along fine IMHO

yes it will, it seems to me the torque converter lockup is different, much better suited to towing, like the shift points are higher

of course in OD/lockout it locks you out of 4th

like I said a good improvement over the 47

I have a DRW 2006, but I have had many issues with the tranmission not wanting to pull my dump trailer loaded with 5k on it when I have to stop and take off on much of a grade. Mine is still under warranty and it has had to be service several times and still doesn't pull well. That is the ONLY complaint I have with the truck.

That is as much or more a gearing problem as a trans problem.

Towing on grades is done better with the 4. 10 gears although a lil more power would help

So in Tow/Haul the transmission will use all 4 gears?

Yes all gears are still utilized, plus the shift stategy is changed to allow higher rpm before up shifts and will downshift better to help control hill descent.

With the cruise control engaged my truck rarely needs any brakes except on the longer and or steeper grades while towing my airstream

Mine is an '07 Dually, 4WD with the 48RE automatic and 3. 73 diffs. We pull a 27 ft 5th wheel with it and it does fine... . except the mileage sucks compared to my previous '01.
I can tell you that switching the ATF to Ams/Oil ATF will help your transmission run cooler. On our F250 6. 3 PS with AT, it dropped our towing trans temp by 25 degrees going back and forth across NV on I-80 in the summertime.
I tow most always in the Tow/Haul mode and use the cruise unless I am on a long grade, like between Idaho Falls and Butte on I-15.
