Time to upgrade to a newer truck. Thinking about a 2006 2500. Need information on engine power. Did the 2006 have the option of a high output engine and a standard output ?. I know some other years did.

Input appreciated.

As far as I'm concerned, the stock trans (auto) and turbo are pretty much maxed out on a stock motor. If you want any significant up grade it really should be preceeded with a built transmission (or clutch) and a good turbo. Just my opinion, but I like to do things right the first time and I don't want to melt my motor or be left strained. That said, I did get a Smarty and am running the low hp setting on an otherwise stock truck (expect for the fuel pump). If you don't want to go so far as to the above mentioned mods (read $$$) then the Smarty is real nice. It does more than just add hp, but changes the way the hp is delivered. The torque management is great and even the 30hp SW showed a great improvement in drivability and 1-2 mpg improvement. I have the 50hp SW on now and I think I"m already slipping the TC. Anyway, just realize you need good supporting mods to handle any real hp gains. Small gains can be used on a stock truck and can make a real different in the truck.

I had a '98 12V with a Banks kit and slightly beefed up transmission before I bought my '06. Man, the '06 outperforms the '98in virtually every way, except fuel ecomomy. I never thought I would be as happy with the trade as I am. I loved the old truck but it just didn't compare, even with $5K in improvements.

I have an 06, my first CTD actually.

Only 21K on the odometer. Been all trouble free miles. With the Smarty Jr on level 1 (40hp) - Economy setting, it's even better.

I think an '06 would be a good choice. I sold my '01. 5 this summer and steped up to my '07, 5. 9. I loved my '01 but after driving the new one, I would never go back! I DON'T miss the AUTOMATIC trans. I drove my friends new '07, 5. 9 AUTO and I love my 6 speed!

Went from a 98. 5 (with a Banks Stinger) to a 2006 with 50 hp injectors. Both are 2500's, QC, 4X4 automatics. Quality of ride and power is far superior in the 06. By the way, my son got the 98. 5 and commutes, tows a 35' travel trailer and uses it for hunting. It still has the original 47RE (no repairs, only maintenance at 150K+ miles).

What will you give up? 'Cheaper' interior, thinner sheet metal, less quality paint, etc... I really enjoy driving the 2006 much more and never look back.

Good luck.
