WD Hitch Question

towing 20,000 lbs

I test drove a new Ford 550 with custom built bed yesterday. PStroke and auto. That is one fine trailer towing machine. The dealer truck specialist told me that Ford will come out with stroked 6. 0 PS in mid year.

Dodge better wake up.

3500 gap

If you look at the top GVW of Dodge 3500 and what you need to fill the gap above 3500 for the large tow jobs Dodge can't touch what Ford & Chevy does with their 4500/5500s. I do hope Dodge comes out with a 4500/5500 type truck for 2006.

Look at the projections of Mega cab dually 10. 5K GVW

I don't think so.

2006 Qc 3500

I looked at a 2006 Quad Cab 3500 RAM today and the GVW on this truck was 11,500#. I am running 11,300# on my 2500 pulling my 36' Cedar Creek. That is only 200#s to spare on a 2006 3500. I am sure a 3500 weighs more than 200#s than my 2500. Are we saying even with a 3500 I would be pushing the limit?

I talked to a fleet manager the other day... . 12-18 months till a dodge 4500-5500. Hard to know the reliability of this info. He said he knew one of the project mgr's.

Cumminz,

I looked at the 450/550's before I bought my truck.

Loved the high towing #'s, and the 19. 5 inch wheels.

Didn't like the 45k+ price tag once I figured in a nice looking bed etc...

Also, with the 550's you could only get 4. 88's I think, 450's you could get 4. 30's or so. Mileage would really be huring.

I tow a 12k 5th wheel trailer and couldn't be happier with my pick so far... .

Dave

The 550 I looked at was 60k and had 4. 30s. With the 19. 5s the rpms were comprable with my 2004. 5 with 4. 10s with 315s.

Dave,

Meaning absolutely no dis-respect for your truck or mine but the Ford 550 is twice the truck of a 2500/3500 Dodge.

I own an F550 and spend 2 to 3 thousand a year keeping the electronics running, not including tow bills... . it is the worst buying decision in a truck I've ever made... body, chassis, is fine... . but the power stroke has had as least 4 sets of injectors... wiring replaced through the valve covers... . one day the dome lite quite... it was the accessory computer... along with the dome light was the ability to open the windows and run the cruise control... that computer alone was 450 or something like that. .

BTW... when it runs... it tows well... . but to get that we had to change the rear end gears the first month we owned it... was geared to low and wouldn't run 70 mph down the highway empty...

It may be twice the truck, but it's half the motor / electronics,... go read TheDieselStop.com prior to purchasing a 6. 0... ... if they're scrapping the 6. 0 after 4 years and going to the rumored 6. 4 with twins, you have to ask yourself why..... could it be the record $500 mil in warranty claims in which a large portion was diesel (6. 0) related? I'm not brand loyal, i buy what i think is the best vehicle for my needs, so please dont take this as ford bashing, go read the site, it's comical / scarry all at the same time..... and I dont buy the "only people with problems" post on the site, becasue this site and the other dodge sites have no where near the depressing posts that ford does... .

All three of you are preaching to the choir. I agree with all three of you.

Just hope Dodge in 2007 gives us a decent ton and a half truck.

The company that I work for bought a 550 and a 5500 in early 2004. Both were purchased to replace Dodge 3500s. They thought the Dodges were not heavy enough for what they wanted to use them for. The Duramax/Allison would not pull a 7000# trailer at interstate speeds. The trailer is very tall and has tremendous wind resistance. It would gain speed and then it would down shift out of overdrive into direct and then Tach out. After several trips back to the dealer they got a new rear end out of GM. They were told the 4. 88?? was to high and the 5. 13?? would be just the ticket. It was not. They finally put an Edge on it at my recommendation. It now pulls very well. It has one good seat (air ride) and the passenger and rear seat are BAD. The guys refer to it as "The short bus".

The Ford was a much better puller from the start with the 6. 0 and the Torqshift. It also had an interior closer to a pickup than a class 6 truck with a back seat like the Chevy. It was by far the favorite to start with. At a little over 100K it needed a high pressure oil pump ($2K). The dealer imediatly recommended a new motor for $12K. He said with all the problems they are having with the 6. 0, he would not let it steal a thousand dollars here and a thousand dollars there. The new motor would also have a 24 or 36 month warranty with no mileage limit! The company opted to put in the oil pump only. About three weeks late it needed some injectors and some thing else and they were out another $3K. The last time they were down here it was having rough idle and they could not keep the water in fuel light off. I would guess it will need a turbo and/or EGR to cure this. The Ford no longer is the favorite.

The Dodges that they have run in the past were not as costly as the Ford to keep on the road. They needed several 5th gear nuts on one and some odds and ends on the others. They did blow one motor at well over 100K. Dodge determined that the valve train was bad from the start and they covered the motor under warranty despite the mileage.

Cumminz,

It is twice the truck as far as frame/suspension/brakes. But deff not engine. I looked at a 350 and 550 side by side and the size of the axles and brakes were mindboggling.

When I really thought about what I was going to use the truck for I just didn't need that much truck.

I think I read or was told, that in the Ford 550 that you could option a Cummins in it. They don't call it a Cummins and its painted Ford blue, but it is a 5. 9 ISB. Like I said, not sure but if you can, then that would fix the engine problem. I haven't looked into it because I don't need that big of a truck. And if I did then I'd go with an FL 60/70.

Chris

CUMMINZ, the 650 could have been what I was thinking about. As I remember the logic was that Dodge didn't make a truck in that market, so Ford could offer the Cummins and not be in competition with Dodge.

Thanks, Chris
