Hello 3rd Generation Gurus,

I've got an aging 1995 (196,000 miles), 2nd Generation Ram Diesel with the @#$%& 47RH automatic transmission. After a transmission overhaul at 64,000 miles... replacing the first-to-second gear kickdown band lever at about 90,000... and replacing several transmission temperature sensors and throttle position sensors, I vowed to NEVER own a four-wheel-drive truck with an automatic transmission again... EVER. :-{}

Having said that, I just finished reading the 2006 Mega Cab article... and noticed (for the first time) that an alternative manual transmission is being offered for 2006. The article said it was the "G56" that will be replacing the NV5600. I've kind of had it in mind that my next Ram Diesel would have the NV5600, but I don't have a clue about this new G56 transmission.

Do any of you guys know more about this G56 transmission... and could you tell me where it came from... who makes it... what track history is has, in terms of reliability and ability to take the abuse a Cummins can dish out?

I'd love to know more... so bring it on!

Thanks... Kevin

Kevin... You could look back to some of the "Thread's" here on the TDR, some folk's do have this new 6 spd.

Not a Guru yet. ;)

G56's are going into trucks now, mine should have one when it finally gets here in the next week or two. There have been a few threads here with the differences (I believe gear ratios and the dual mass flywheel for the most part)... ... and an opinion or two.

I waited to long to order the NVG5600 but I'm sure I'll be happy with what I'm getting. Only time will tell the story for sure.

Thanks guys.

Thanks everyone... I appreciate the info and the links.

I picked up some info from my local Dodge ******* today... while I was purchasing my forth transmission temperature sensor for my @#$%& 47RH automatic transmission. Currently my TCC and overdrive kick in and out frequently... and the transmission overtemp light in the dash lights up from time to time. $48 bucks for that dang part. One of these days I'm going to solder a 1000 ohm resistor across the leads of the connector going to this sensor and call it a day! :D

Getting back to the G56 transmission info... I'm not happy with the 0. 79 overdrive backed by a 3. 73 rear end ratio... in terms of RPM at freeway speeds I like to drive. Where the heck did the 3. 54 go? And what possessed them to do a dumb thing like that? Can you say mileage? Have you purchased diesel in California recently? It ain't getting any cheaper!!!

Used NV5600 or new G56... I don't care anymore... I just know for sure my next Cummins will not be backed by a #@$%& automatic transmission.

Thanks again... Kevin

The 3. 54 ratios when by the wayside in 03 with the new American axles. Now in 06 the G56 with it's low overdrive ratio is backed by the highest available ratio, the 3. 73. It's going to be a slow combo. So slow in fact they don't even offer the 4. 10 ratio with the G56 due to the low overdrive. Read up in Vaughn's links and make your own call. It's too early to tell about relaibility of the manual box but the dual mass flywheel concept that is to accompany it does not have a good reputaion from the Ford camp.

Nor does the dual-mass flywheel have any good feedback from the GM camp. either.

I'd trade my 5600 for a G56 in a minute. I wish I had the 4. 10's.

It all depends on your own preferances, I wish I had my 3. 54's back, or even better the 3. 07's of the early models. That would give me a cruising gear

It was stated on one of the articles that the gearing options would once again include the 3. 54's. I know AA makes a 3. 54, so it should be available somehow.
