My 06 has about 250k on it and the transmission it getting VERY noisy with a vibration in it when you back off the pedal and coast. I do like the way the transmission shifts. I have been told that the G56 is not very strong. I have my truck turned up and what to make sure I put in a transmission that will last. I have heard that the aluminum housing whallesr out the main shaft bearing holes and the gear sets are not as strong?

So, here are my questions:

1. Is the G56 a good strong transmission to put back in it?

2. Is there a better transmission to use?

3. Is there a reputable rebuilder out there or should I get a new one?

Any info is appreciated. I had also heard of using a big truck transmission, but can't find any posts on that.

I have heard of very few G56 failures (except the clutch). If you have 250K miles on it I'd say it has already proven itself - just rebuild it or exchange for a rebuilt.

I didn't put all the miles on it. It was stock and a camper trailer mover. I put about 35k on it and put the SBC clutch, smarty, and 50hp sticks in it. I am just making sure before making a mistake. I put the NV5600 in my 99 when the NV4500 was giving me problems.

The G56 transmission is a Mercedes Benz designed medium-heavy duty truck Brazilian built transmission. Yes their clutch is a weak point but there's after market for that. I'll rebuild mine and enjoy it until the total truck dies 20 some years down the road.

the noise is coming from the clutch. the g56 design makes it transmit noise more so than previous ones. that is why the dmf. the new southbend kit has a solid flywheel. the noise is normal. we tow very heavy and i think the g56 06 to 07. 4 is the best geared and built transmission that dodge ever used. it does take a while to get use to the noise. all 4 of our dmf's failed the first at 35,000 the highest at 75,000. you need to run one quart over full to properly lube and cool the front bearing we use atf4+. none of ours have ever had a problem and when we haul our 710 extenda hoe i gross 44,000 lbs across the scales we run state wide with that load

JHawk, i was just on the phone with Blumenthals in Oklahoma City, and was asking if i could switch out my 5600 for what you have, because i have to get mine replaced. i was told that you can't switch the 5600 for the 56 but you can get a kit to go the other way. i was also told that the 5600 is a better trans and i should just get a re-man. (i don't think you can get a new one) so thats what i'am doing. i hope this sheds a little light on your problem. Norton

The NV-5600 and G-56 are both good in our Dodge Ram applications. Either one of them will provide 250k to 350k miles of service under normal conditions.

The two transmissions each have different strengths and weaknesses but when we step back and put it in perspective, our trucks have powerful high torque engines that create maximum torque down very low in the rpm band, almost instantly above idle, and some of us pull extremely heavy loads with them.

Seven or ten speed transmissions like the ones in HDTs would be better but they are too large, too heavy, and probably too expensive for Dodge to squeeze them into our Dodge chassis.

like harvey said, we have both with high loaded mileage with no problems. the g56 got a bad rap from the young people that pull, it seems the g56 will every once in a while explode when running above 800 rear wheel hp. that has got to be near 1,000 flywheel hp.
