Just talked to the local 5****** dealer they are freeking out about the 2006 RAM that now has the CANBUS electircal system. They are saying the Dakota is a nightmare... . I am going to wait and see. Take a look at the latest issue of consumers reports on first year quality... WOOPS

I was under the impression that all our 3rd Gen's had a CANBus of some sort. I thought that's why the cool Cummins data devices wouldn't work on our trucks?

I could be wrong.

Anybody else know anything about that?

The cummins end has always been can bus,now in o6 so is the Dodge end for the most part. The can bus will be federally mandated soon. It is nec. for its speed and ability to operate many modules that will be required to share info. A nice feature is now we can watch actual fuel advance/retarding real time.

I've done a fair amount of research on this, and I believe as of 2003 all the common-rail trucks use a CAN bus architecture. It works just fine, so I'm not sure what your dealer is talking about...

Our current trucks communicate via a PCI bus. However when you are talking directly to the PCM you are talking over the SCI bus. The new trucks will communicate via CAN B and C bus. Actually CAN bus is very fault tolerant, which means you can short or cut one of the two bus wires and the modules can still communicate with each other. The reason for going to CAN architecture is the higher speed, fault tolerance, and the number of modules supported. If you hate CAN it is because you have not worked with it. Actually I like it much better than the old CCD, PCI bus systems. Below is a comparison of the bus speeds to show just how much faster it is.

CCD twisted pair 7. 8k bits per second

PCI single wire 10. 4k bits per second

CAN-B twisted pair 83. 3k bits per second

CAN-C twisted pair 500k bits per second

CAN is used with a lot of heavy truck and industrial applications and we have some pieces using it. No problems yet. I know GM has been using a slower version for body communication for the last 10 years or so. Ford just started using it across the board.

I know it's easier to tap into the bus and install instruments/ control panels. I am looking for a way to get into it on the Cummins end on our trucks. I emailed Cummins directly and got a political response. This could possibly be THE way to hook up an oil pressure gauge.
