I didnt, I just slid the new one on. If I remember right the splines on the transfer case had a light coating of transmission fluid on them.

There's no way that I can see that it could come in contact with a cross member. And well, if it contacts the frame then someone put it in sideways! Seriously, maybe it's a 2WD issue?

One a different note, anybody know what application would use the shaft with the dampener?

Thanks.

If I get some free Time I will locate one... On the mega with Getrag You will have to shorten. .

Thanks for the responses... that is my main concern is the one Dodge sells going to fit without making any adjustments. . either shorten or lengthen. I have to drive 4 hours to families house to install due to it's winter and I do not want to make a trip all the ay over there and it not fit. I called several local places to see if they can shortenor lengthen and none do aluminum. So if any one knows specifics I would appreciate it, hate to order drive 4 hours and the thing not fit.

It should be a direct fit... Mega Auto. Lucky you live In Bozeman I visit 3/4 yearly. . might need snow report in the future. . Otherwise I would have NOT posted. . tried of the BS at the TDR keystroke king(s).

Not sure what the status is with your drive shaft but wanted to give you my . 02. So I have an 06 Mega which came with the two-piece drive shaft. After some research in TDR I was able to obtain the Dodge part number for the one-piece. Note: I think in 2007 or 2007. 5 Dodge changed the two-piece to a one-piece on all Mega-cabs... . I confirmed this because several of my buddies have new mega-cabs..... and they alll have the one-piece. So if you call Dodge and ask for a drive shaft part number on a 2006 ... they will give you the two-piece part number. When I purchased mine I gave them the correct part number (from an 07 mega) and they sold me the one-piece. Note: There are two different part numbers associated to the auto and the manual transmissions. I have a G56 manual. After the install I can tell you it was night and day difference... ... ..... and probably the best upgrade I have done to my truck!! When you call the dealer they will give you the "run-around" about the shaft hitting the truck ... which will only happen if you leave the cross-member on the truck which is where the carrier bearing was located on the two piece. Take the carrier bearing mount off your truck and you will have no problem!!! I have over 75k miles on my one-piece and no issues!!! Note: I have pulled trailers from 3k pounds to 15k pounds!!! The best part I eliminated two u-joints by replacing with the one piece shaft. Trust me this is worth the trouble of replacing.

after you remove the carrier bearing assembly. then remove the rectangular bracket that it bolted to (so you just have a bare, and flat crossmember)and you will be fine.

According to TC, it isn't necessary to remove that bracket and i haven't on mine (See post 16).
Just my . 02.

Just wanted to come on here and tell everyone about my drive shaft swap. My truck has 119K miles and it's a 06 Mega Cab, 3500 SRW, 4x4, 5.9L Cummins w/ Automatic (48re). I've gone through 3 carrier bearings in the last year and a half after I did a 6" lift and 35" tires. OEM PN 521231161 AC was a bolt in replacement for the 2 piece shaft. The swap tool less than 10 minutes and half of that was spent taking off the carrier bearing bracket. Only time will tell if this was all worth it but for now, I've had the new drive shaft on the truck for 3 weeks and drove it on a 4 hour road trip plus it's my daily driver and it is a noticeable improvement.

Additional comments: Although I can't say that I'm seeing better MPG, I can say that the new drive shaft is less than half the weight of the steel 2 piece. Also, I can't find any reason why I needed the damper so I bought this one because it comes without one.

I have the exact same DS installed in my truck (after shortening 1.5" and balancing). Great improvement - almost zero launch shudder unless I really mash it.

one piece shaft

BTW, if anyone is interested. I have a spare, one piece shaft like the one I put in my mega cab and I can do without it. I'll take cash or trade for things that can exterminate hogs or go bang.
