Can you imagine if 50 years ago they had someone try to sue a company because they spilt hot coffee on themselves? They would throw it out of the court and tell the person they're a dumb*ss.
Most of the time I totally agree with most of you. But on this instance I have to be the one that stands against you all. This nation is not led by money hungry lawyers, or people looking to get rich quick through lawsuits. Check the numbers, there has NOT been a significant rise in tort cases in this country in the last 30 years. Alot of your misconceptions because of this come from big-businesses that are pushing tort reform like crazy to lower their costs. And if you noticed I said misconceptions, I used the correct word. For instance the McDonalds coffee case. While you might think of it in disgust, do you know the true details of that case? If you do you probobly do not joke about it or think of that woman as a moron. That coffee McDonalds served her was 190 degrees. The average home coffee maker is at 130-140 degrees. Did you also know that she suffered 3rd degree burns on her body. And do you know what part of her body she suffered these burns on. Lets just say it was below the waist. The flimsy cup that McDonalds served the 190 degree coffee in somewhat collapsed on itself and doused her. She had many skin grafts and infact could not even walk for several months. But because of the lies that tort reformers have spread through the media to all of us, most people dont know about this. Oh also she was awarded 2 to 4 million dollars I believe, of that do you know how much she actually got? Under 100K to be permantely disfigured the rest of her life. Did you also know that she didnt want to sue McDonalds at first, she simply wanted them to apologize and help pay her bills. Alot of these "trivial" cases that we make fun of are very important in this country. This is the only way that we can make sure that big businesses do not exploit us w/negligent products, services or the like.
