My brother is having a little trouble with his truck and he is looking for some input with his troubleshooting. Here is the email he sent me:

"i have a diesel question. yesterday i was towing my rv home from dallas. we were in some decent size hills. going uphill at 75 mph, egt about 1250. i changed lanes to pass and gave a slight push on accelerator. i watched the boost go up like normal then drop to zero with a corresponding loss of power. i slowed down to about 70 and tried the turbo and it functioned as expected. it seemed as though the turbo didn't want me to go faster than 75 or so. i made it home ok but stayed under 75. i have towed as fast as 90 mph out west but on level ground. does the computer have a fail safe???? i hate to think my turbo is going south with only 106000 miles. "

His truck is a 2006 4x4 Auto. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Ed B

Need more info on programmers, gages, etc. Off hand it sounds like the waste is just opening when it hits a certain point, or, a back down parameter was hit.

I've heard of people having the same problem but most of the time it throws some type of code. The ones i seen were sticking vanes on the turbo and dirty Mass air flow sensor. Sounds like it possibly needs a good cleaning.

Thanks for the replies. The truck is bone stock. No programmers or performance mods. He runs Auto Meter gauges. I know the truck has a bypass oil filter. I do not think he runs secondary fuel filtration. Hopefully a fuel filter change will take care of the problem (cause that would be an easy fix!). Well know more later on today. Ed B

My old 06 would do something similar. It ended up being a plugged air filter. the turbo wasnt getting enough air so the ecm was opening the waste gate as to not hurt the turbo. At least thats what imy mechanic told me after i paid him to find the problem. Changed the air filter and never had the problem again.

Need Smarty Jr

Ed,

You might want to consider a smarty jr for towing. I know I feel a lot safer with EGT 100 degree lower when pulling hard. Added bonus most people save enough in fuel bill to pay for it in a two years.

Joe

PS. 90 MPH is pretty fast for towing a load, wonder what mileage you get at that speed

Yes, I stopped riding with my brother 20 years ago. On correction the truck does have a Walbro, inline filter, and a 2 micron filter, as well as the stock filter. He told me the filters have 10k miles on them. They will be changed out today. Is it possible to get the trouble codes with the key on/off 3 times on an '06? Ed B
