Heat exchanger failed

I am due for a coolant change on my 2007, 5.9. I want something with at least 5 year to 10 year life coolant.
I have used the red Mopar coolant concentrate before.
 
The Mopar coolant is only a 3 year coolant. I figure if I am going through all the work and mess, I want to use an extra life 5 year coolant. The ELC coolants are that.
 
I wanted to add this…

If it’s good enough for CAT wet sleeve and sleeveless engines including the perkapillars (Perkins) it will work well for a sleeveless Cummins.

There are so many coolant variants on the market now that it’s just crazy. Penray gave up on their coolant charts because they simply couldn’t keep up.

I have pared it down at work to straight Green antifreeze for people that are determined to use it, Detroit Extended Life Coolant and the Cat Coolant. That’s it.

If Cat trusts it in a $40,000.00 engine for 12,000 engine hours (with sampling of course) I am good with the product.

Just my opinion, there will be many more..:D

Or is it only for the later engines? All the different formulations and what they can and cannot be used in gets darn confusing! Sorry, I am not yelling, I cut and pasted the name of the coolant.

Where are you seeing 3 years on Mopar coolant? The OEM coolant is a 5 year/100K mile coolant. When you buy G05 from Zerex it’s 5 years/150K miles.

The factory fill was HOAT. Is that still in the truck? HOAT is known to not mix well with other types of coolant.

You can use the 10 year stuff, but should flush a few times to get the HOAT out if that’s still what you’re using.

Also, we can’t drain all the coolant out so I recommend only using distilled water to flush, then add the proper concentrate for a 50:50 ratio and top off with distilled water. If you use premix to fill your ratio will be off.

Yes, I flushed and refilled with the OE Mopar 5 year/100,000 mile, part # 68048953AB.
I will order the OE Mopar coolant that is for my engine, HOAT.

Thanks, I'll order another gallon.

Ordered the three through Amazon, $19.45 a gallon for the concentrate. Since I already had free shipping, Amazon shipped the 4th gallon for free too.

I can find info saying that HOAT and OAT are not compatible and also that HOAT and OAT are compatible. About 1/2 and 1/2 split.

BUT the ONLY thing I have found that is published and not simply a statement is that chart from Penray showing that they are indeed compatible. I trust Penray.
Only warning is that over 10% mix can cause a reduction in cooling system protection.
No mention of goop formation or other undesirable side effects. So a drain of HOAT and a refill of OAT will be fine even you don’t get every last bit of HOAT. And I’ve done that very thing in several trucks with no mess or reduced heater efficiency.

BUT you must test the OAT coolants with a refractometer for a true reading of freeze protection.

Had a rash of Cat water pump seal failures. Come to find out people were testing with a floating ball style. Lied like the devil. Showed 20° of freeze protection when in reality they were good for -30°. They would add straight coolant to lower the freeze point which added way too much inhibitor. That in turn caused the pump seal to leak as it built up enough crud to overcome the pressure of the spring that pushes against the ceramic seal surface. Customer education solved the issue.

Lots of horror stories of HOAT not playing well with others years ago (even universal coolants), I wouldn’t mix it with anything else without doing 3-4 distilled water flushes.
 
Not doubting it, and probably more to the story than we are being told. I would suspect in some cases green antifreeze was involved at some point which is indeed a total no-no…

But again no warning from a coolant manufacturer. That’s all I’m saying…
 
Like said, simpel.
You can go with the factory HOAT, brand doesn't matter, and have 5 years.
Or do a proper flush and use any modern OAT and that lasts for 10 years.
The decision is yours.
