Considering smaller 5er toy hauler

///// Heavy hauling for personal use ? CDL / DOT # ? //////

My truck is a 2007, 5.9, Quad Cab, LATE G-56 with a 6.5' short bed. I am looking at the B&W Turn over ball type hitch with the B&W RVK3400 SLIDER 5th wheel hitch.
Has anyone had ANY experience with this set-up in a short bed and do I really need a slider 5th wheel? I don't want rails left in the bed so that is why I want the B&W with only one hole in the center of the bed.

Hi Motorhead,
I had similar questions last year. I have a 2005 5.9, Quad Cab, 48RFE with a 6.4 short bed with the B & W Turn over ball hitch. Several people on this site replied that it depends on your trailer. How the front of the 5er is rounded. Many of the newer units have rounded fronts that allow you to use a short bed truck without using a slider.
I purchased a new Heartland Sundance XLT and bought the RVK3500 Companion (Non-Slider) and I love it. Great hitch and I can get to nearly 90 degrees before I get worried about hitting the cab. You can hit it if you turn it to about 90 degrees but I have found that when you are at that angle you aren't moving the 5er much in the direction that you want anyway. So I just straighten it out a bit.
So if you have a flat front 5er you would benefit with a slider. If you have a newer rounded front on your 5er you could definitely go with the Companion.
I am 63 and I can take the hitch out myself. It is heavy, but there are two pieces so that helps. I am going to build me a roll up platform so I can just take the hitch out and then slide it on the platform and wheel it away.

If you get the slider you will definitely need help getting it out. It is quite a bit heavier.

Hope that helps.
Good luck

Thanks brewmark. I have also seen the small blocks that you bolt on to the king pin and it spaces it forward a few inches. Did you run air bags or air shocks on your 2005?
I have a Kubota 32hp diesel, B3200 tractor with a front loader so I plan on using that to R&R the fifth wheel part. The RVK 3500 Companion is also quite a bit cheaper. Thanks again. Chris

Hi Motorhead,
I didn't do anything to my pinbox on the 5er. I did install firestone air bags. Although I didn't need to. My XLT is not heavy enough. The pin box weight is supposed to be 1600 to 1700 pounds and with the height of the 4x4 bed the 5er sits just slightly high in the front so I didn't need or want it up any higher. If your rig is heavier they could come in handy.
I installed the air bags myself and it was pretty easy.

You might want to do a search here in the forum for B&W and Companion and slider to see if you can find some of the older threads on the B&W hitches.
There was a guy called Wingate that helped my out. He had the same truck (and color) as mine and he showed pics of his rig and made measurements for me. Made me confident to go ahead and order the hitch and I have been VERY happy with it. Great engineering and it has been everything that I had read about. Easy (Relatively) to get in and out of my truck. Easy to hitch and release.

I attached a pic of my rig hooked up.

THis is what this site is all about!!! Thanks brewmark. I'll look up wingate. I see the nose on your 5er and how it has indents.
