Suspected a possible weak lift pump, so I replaced it . It ran and started perfect BEFORE with exception on pulling a hill...was getting Service Required /See Dealer Now ,then limp and even quit several occasions.
With new pump in ,it started right up ran fine ,then quit. Talked to diesel mechanic and he thinks I need to continue cranking with charger on , until it fires. I did so cranking every ten fifteen minutes for 15 twenty seco nd turns. Do I need to start bleeding ?

Your lift pump is electronic and should pump, when key is turned to the run position, the pump runs for about 10sec. Do you hear it running before cranking it over? Did you change the fuel filter? Follow the directions for a filter change out, even if you didn't change it.

The filter was changed about a month ago with less than 2K on it. Can't hear the pump from cab. Ill have to wave someone down to turn key for me while Im back there at tank. Its behind axle tank

So pull filter out ? Because it seems like Im getting a little bit on filter,if I unscrew the water drain at bottom and keep cycling from tap starter, leave onrun off tap starter, leave on run, then off..and I get a dribble coming out

Pulled fuel filter out and it barely has any fuel in bottom. Cycling with filter removed ,a fuel vapor drifts down from the OEM filter housing inside when I leave key on run. It keeps making a sound like a quick bizzt and the vapors ,looking like light smoke come drifting down from filter housing inside. Need to get this truck UP and out of this garage.

Seems like your lift pump isn't pumping. I'd follow that as the problem, I don't know the wiring, but you should be able to bypass controls by connecting 12VDC direct to pump while the bleed valve is open to see if it is pumping on demand. That way you eliminate the control side of the system and will verify pump issue. You might want to install a pickup only in tank and run a Fass system (any brand for that matter) and get a better filtration. As I was typing this, it occurred to me you might have something in the tank getting caught up in the pickup of the assembly?

Cleaned tank out completely . If I can find a FP relay I could hot wire pump but I need to locate relay ,if there even is one. Cant afford an aftermarket as we are self employed and no snow to plow. Pump I took out was original with 279 K so I just went with OEM

Where was the plug to pump when it was replaced, find pins in diagram to the pump. The plug should have several conductors for sending unit, pump motor and related controls but two should go to pump. Connect the motor leads only to 12VDC to run it, making sure the correct polarity 12VDC HOT & 12VDC GROUND. Isn't there a trouble shooting guide to check the pumps GPM. PM TDR member Bob4x4 for guidance. Good luck.

I was questioned about bumping the starter to make the fuel pump run longer.........I had to double check my Service CD so I have pasted the results below...I ASSUME that the '08 C/C will be the same...Try the starter bump procedure and see if the pump runs longer like it supposed to..I do the starter bump and let the pump run until it stops three to four times before attempting to start the truck after a fuel filter change.

"FUEL SYSTEM PRIMING
A certain amount of air becomes trapped in the fuel system when fuel system components on the supply and/or
high-pressure side are serviced or replaced. Fuel system priming is accomplished using the electric fuel transfer (lift)
pump.
Servicing or replacing fuel system components will not require fuel system priming.
The fuel transfer (lift) pump is self-priming: When the key is first turned on (without cranking engine), the pump
operates for approximately 1 to 2 second and then shuts off (Note: When ambient temperatures are cold enough to
cause the intake air heaters to operate, the fuel lift pump will operate during the entire intake air pre-heat cycle).
The pump will also operate for up to 25 seconds after the starter is quickly engaged, and then disengaged without
allowing the engine to start. The pump shuts off immediately if the key is on and the engine stops running.
1. Turn key to CRANK position and quickly release key to ON position before engine starts. This will operate fuel
transfer pump for approximately 25 seconds.
2. Crank engine. If the engine does not start after 25 seconds, turn key to OFF position, and leave it off for at least
5 seconds. Repeat previous step until engine starts.
3. Fuel system priming is now completed.
4. Attempt to start engine. If engine will not start, proceed to following steps. When engine does start, it may run
erratically and be noisy for a few minutes. This is a normal condition.
CAUTION: Do not engage the starter motor for more than 30 seconds at a time. Allow two minutes between
cranking intervals.
5. Perform previous fuel priming procedure steps using fuel transfer pump. Be sure fuel is present at fuel tank.
6. Crank the engine for 30 seconds at a time to allow fuel system to prime

Does anyone know if there is a fuel pump relay ,or is that commanded by the ECM ?As much as Ive cranked this thing ,I should have five gallons on the floor with filter off. Wish now I had got an Airdog .Ive got 312 in the OEM pump.

Fixed !! The ground pin at connector was pulled out when mounting the tank. Shoved it in ,plugged it in and have fuel and started right up. Holding my breath to see if Service Required/See Dealer Now comes on ,on the overhead console.

No ,the 2003 5.9 with 401,000 miles on her mustered the snow (when we got it),and used it to spread salt. Talking ,asking ,posting and like they say don't ignor the obvious. Its strange ,I can never remember hearing the in tank pump before.
