Can someone look in the 2010 to 2012 manuals in the STEERING section under LINKAGE-LINK/COIL and see if there is any mention of diagnosing the tie rod ends? I’m specifically wondering about the right outer end which is not a typical ball and socket arrangement. Are there any specs for up and down play? Do they give any hints that the right outer end is unique?

Thanks.

Go see the dealer... ours needed to be "inspected" per a recall. Apparently some left the factory with the wrong geometry and were wearing out prematurely. They check both sides, but the right is the problem one.

Thanks for the reply, but I’ve learned the hard way exactly what is up with that rod end.

Chrysler has gone through the recalls and goes to great lengths to stress the importance of installing the rod ends at the same angle, yet I have never seen written or even heard mentioned on the boards that the right outer end is different and the root cause of the issues.

With this thread I am trying to see if Chrysler has informed the mechanics of this ******* rod end. This linkage has been out since 2008 and there appears to be no information out there. I have always found that explaining to a customer why doing something is so important is much more likely to get compliance than just telling them to take extra care with no explanation. Seems Chrysler could have saved some money (recalls, warranty repairs, etc) by alerting mechanics to the unique rod end.

Do you have a FSM and does it say anything about the right outer end being different?

The only way to get a 2010 and up service manual is to subscribe to it online for an annual fee of about $1100.

Thanks for the info. Its kind of hard to believe they've gone to a $1,100/year subscription as the only option! Wow what are they thinking? Can't imagine not having the FSM and being totally dependent on the dealers for service information. Not having a reasonably priced offline FSM would factor into the purchase decision when looking at new trucks.
