Last year my heater wasn't connected to power without a flash and this year it might burn up? Sheesh... Fuel heaters have been around a long time, they must of decided to "improve" them.

Found this on the 'net, probably more likely where they have road salt:
In trucks with 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engines, corrosion on a fuel heater terminal could cause overheating, fuel leaks and fires. Chrysler is not aware of any fires or injuries. Owners could be warned by an odor of diesel fuel.

Just seen a article in Motor Trend that Chrysler is going to issue a recall for a faulty wiring harness connected to the fuel heater. Its causing undue heat some way. If it were me I'd unplug it. Unless I got a CEL.

Unplugging it seems a bit overboard at this point to me........No fires have been reported, and it is just a corrosion issue on the terminals. Should be easy enough to check the terminals. Also, the fuel heater doesn't even come on until it gets pretty frikkin' cold............

Do the 2010's have the rear frame mounted filter or did that start in 2013? I was thinking about the recall and since it starts with the 2010 that it must be the engine mounted filter that overheats. That should be easier to keep an eye on if it's only that filter.

On the other hand, if it's a heater/harness design problem, it might apply to both filters. I hate the lack of precise information. Most of us on this forum would like to inspect our own trucks if we knew what we were looking for.

Thanks Sam Wait and see is probably the best approach right now. I ran my VIN and it resulted in nothing so it may be too soon. If I knew which conector is bad I'd put some dielectric grease on it myself. And if it's just a little corrosion that's what Dodge is like to do anyway.

On the other hand, it's much more fun to panic and over react here on the forum. :)

Unplugged fuel heater and checked terminals on my 2010 today. Used a tv camera to look at the female side (faces rear of filter housing). All tidy and clean @ 67,000 miles. And my truck had several pressure wash sessions. A little dilectric grease for insurance.

haha.. how many 7.3L fords are running around with the fuel heater wire cut due to shorting out and killing the truck?...

Is this the right wire and plug? Its on the back side of the fuel filter and is secured with a nylon tie wrap to the oil dip stick tube. The recall report said that some were not secured and were subject to vibration.
