So it turned out, that the tail gate lock on my recently purchased truck was bad (more like a big ball of corrosion), so I replaced it, and wanted to let you guys know (in case you haven’t gone through this issue), that both, the lock cylinder and pawl are replacement items that supersede the old one. The cylinder cost me $59, plus it has to be taken to a locksmith for matching to your existing key, and the pawl is $40 (smh). But I was able to finally replace it and have a functioning lock. The image shows the old version and the new version (in the installed position. :)
