My friend bought his second Dodge Cummins. It is a 2011 3/4 6 speed and it had about 5,000 miles when he bought it. The problem he's having is the truck is dieing like it has no fuel and can't restart it.

The first time his happened it was while he was backing his 5th wheel up and it died. He had it towed to the nearest dealer for warranty and they took it to Barstow, Ca. They first said it was a dirty fuel filter until he told the the dealer was the last person to change it and it was less than 3,000 miles. Then they said it was the fuel pump and so they changed it.

The second time it happened it died near Norco, Ca and the dealer there said the couldn't get truck to do it once and not again so he picked it up.

This time he was coming home and it died going through Virgin River Gorge near Utah. They towed it to St. George, Utah. He was able to get a rental car and make it home. The dealer told him today that the fuel filter was bad and the fuel was no good. This was done with there eyes. They said he has to pay for the repairs and return the rental car in 24 hours. The truck now has 17,000 miles.

Has anyone had a problem like this or know of a TSB? Thanks

There is a publication that describes testing for fuel continuation. It is very specific on where to get the sample and how to do a good visual to see contamination. The corporate response is the contamination is your responsibility since you put it in the tank
There is no tSB that I am aware of

seems like it is something else, the dealer is just changing things just because..... cant imagine having that bad of luck with bad fuel... ... .

HDR,

Perhaps your friend has discovered why someone else bought a new truck and then traded it with only 5,000 miles on the odometer. Being a used truck it is probably not eligible for consideration under the lemon laws if your state has one.

True fuel contamination is a very real and expensive problem, especially with a common rail system. Not to say that is the op's issue

Did they check the Injector/Rail/Pump return rates? my guess is the Rail is leaking... The 6. 7 rail is a leaker. . it take mods to the rail to fix Properly,,,,,,, plugging only delays the leak and ruins the rail in some cases.

The filter could have 100 miles on it and be plugged if he got bad fuel. I hope Barstow didn't pass on the filter and replace the pump because the customer said it was good. I learned a long time ago, never trust what anyone tells you they tested/checked/replaced when diagnosing a problem. Start at the beginning and verify everything yourself.
