Posted info on Ford 6.7L cyl head TSB

Diesel Jeep Liberty

Crap!. . In the shop again. Right side head is off, head gasket is blown. Tech said it also has cracks in several of the exhaust valves on that head. Waiting to hear from Mother Blue Oval as to what they are going to do with it. Truck currently has 83,000 miles on it.

Also found out there is a current TSB out for replacing the exhaust valves on the left side cylinder head of all M. Y. Ford 6. 7L engines!

Sorry to hear that your work truck is giving you issues again. I've read all of your other threads in the past and I'm sure it has to be frustrating at this point. Do you know if the TSBs are for all 6. 7's or just the C/C applications.

Yikes! They're only paying 14 hours for that operation. Can you say RUSH JOB?

We got some 6. 7's. I don't know the particulars on this one, but it got a complete engine from Ford, and the front seal wept. They warranted it.

Well, you have to figure that the Ford techs have had enough practice of pulling that cab at this point that they should be fairly quick by now. :-laf

Seriously though, after the 6. 0L disaster and now the present issues with the 6. 7's, at what point will Ford give up and go another direction in design?

Yeah. . After looking at the diagnostic work they had to do BEFORE pulling the cab, I feel like I need to take a case of beer up there to the techs... !! Theres NO WAY working on one of those trucks is an old mans sport!

I'm afraid it's going in this direction... http://www.automotive-fleet.com/channel/green-fleet/news/story/2013/05/ford-says-gasoline-equipped-f-650-offers-affordability-and-flexibility. aspx

I'm seeing and hearing a LOT of gasoline powered Super Duties- landscape trucks, tow trucks, etc. I cant imagine what the fuel consumption is on a 25K GVW V10 powered F650! We have V10 F350 duallies that are actually comical in how fast it can make the needle move

-You are probably correct on the CNG. I'm seeing more and more of the drilling companies using CNG Rams locally.

Some of our customers service trucks are v10 powered and similarly loaded and the fuel mileage is within 1. 5 MPG as our SD powered trucks. As for CNG, they arent offering it in a medium duty yet that I know of.
MChrist... I believe the reason for it being left side only is that seems I heard Ford is using the left bank for fuel dosing or altered fuel timing for part of the regeneration process. . maybe thats inducing excessive heat on the exhaust valves??. .
It is interesting that the TSB seems to include every 6. 7L PSD built to date!

What are the SD F550's getting for mileage when they are running loaded?

We average 7. 2-7. 8 mpg. We get monthly, quarterly, and annual fuel reports for individual trucks, as well as averaged over all 13 of these trucks we have. THis is data provided to us by our fleet management service.

I find that hard to believe (I assume you meant to say Power Stroke instead of SD powered). I see back to back V10 vs. 6. 0/6. 4 trucks too, and that's not the case, but they're empty pickups. However I don't get reports on them, just impression from operators.

MChrist: thank you for that expression! Now I can explain what the ford scorpion engine does to everyone! I'm sure that will upset a few Furd owners.

I have not heard good stories for Furd yet about any of their diesel trucks. Yet people still buying them because of their brand loyalty which I'm sure must sting a lot.

Wayne. . I said SD, guess I sould have clarified, the 6. 7L Powerstroke. . In pickups running unloaded/lightly loaded... I would expect the fuel mileage to be much better on the diesel vs. the gas engine. . But, for the application conditions I am referring to where the trucks are loaded to GVW every day, the gap really narrows. The diesel mileage falls off more than the gasoline. Couple that with an average of . 50 cheaper fuel per gallon, a cheaper initial price, and a 39. 00 oil change vs. 390. 00 every 5K miles...

That's a curve I've never really studied, (Gas vs. Diesel/ loaded vs. unloaded) That link I posted earlier regarding the F650 said the V10 option is $9K cheaper than the usual Diesel it comes with, but I think most here are wise to that :)
Sad to say, but I think the diesel party is winding down, thanks to the worlds governments.

One of our long time mechanics at work left our site at the beginning of May to work at another site where they just purchased ~70 new V10 medium duties. He was supposed to go to training last month and start there as they took delivery this summer. I don't know if I will run in to him any time soon, but I will certainly report back when/if I run in to him. I know that the 2012 and 2013 Internationals that are at our site are getting ~6mpg. Most are DT466's and there are a few 6. 4L's. IIRC, the 6. 4's get approx . 5 mpg better than the 466's.
