The Truth About Diesel Exhaust Fluid

I am a big Cummins fan and have owned 5 since 92. I do feel however that Dodge will be significantly hurt by the new Ford diesel IF it lives up to the billing. Reason: fuel economy. I am skeptical but I just read another review in which they tested highway, city, towing 10k and offroad playing. The big 4x4 got a combined 22 mpg. If true, it is truly amazing. Typically this magazine has a relatively low number on MPG in their evals. This thing may be a market share eater. I only get about 19 at 75mph highway empty. That sort of fuel mileage in the Ford could save a lot of green for many people

They will have to prove that they get it! Wait and see.

Wingate's work truck clearly doesn't get 1/2 the fuel mileage reported by that magazine. More like 1/3 of the 22 mpg.

Theres a magazine claiming 22 out of an F550 C&C????. . how about that blinker fluid!!!

Please attach the link... I need a good laugh today!

No... . I doubt it! HB just loves to promote Dodge trucks so much that he may forget that C&C's from all manufacturer's suffer from poorer mileage:rolleyes:

Remember the apples to oranges comparison HB..... you can do it:-laf

How heavy is your truck Wingate??

Alan,

Your childish and snide little barbs don't conceal your lack of knowledge or understanding and only make you appear small and petty. You are obviously a lightweight whose comments don't matter to me.

Harvey,

I know you are probably thinking I should be waving my little white flag right about now but I would like to ask you a question. What mileage do you get unloaded?

2011 Fords and Chevy's and even the Dodge are all suffering from emmisions problems. I would love to have a new truck and I do really like the Dodge AND for all the reasons that you do. The Ford does have a very good power curve but I have a problem with the Powerstroke being the 1st model year out. AND the fact that they require the DEF... . especially when this stuff is not readily available at fuel stations yet.

Harvey, I would love to buy the Dodge if I could be certain that I wouldn't suffer the same exact problems other members do on short trips. I take my girls to school every morning for a combined total of 8 miles. The rest of the day would be pulling my 5K lb trailer which SHOULD be enough to load the truck enough to clean the DPF. IDK!

As you have brought up the subject of DEF I just want to toss in what we are seeing here at the Dealership regarding use and availability.

DEF is readily available at Truck Dealerships right now. 2 1/2 gallon jug have been the most popular so far but did sell (5) 55 gallon drums of it in the last week. Oil distributors are getting into now with aggressive pricing so in a short time any concerns about finding it will pass.

330 gallon totes are being promoted for use at fuel islands and large shops. TerraCair is our vendor for that product and they state that a 330 gallon tote will give very close to 100,000 miles of service for a Class 8 truck. If you take that ratio and do the math for a truck that will give 14mpg or so it will not take a lot of DEF for a 1 ton that gets 10,000 mile a year for example.

We have noticed an increase in fuel mileage. One customer has purchased a DD16 Detroit high powered engine and is using it in a logging vocation. He is Randy Bourgoin for any of you that watch American Loggers and see how his truck is used. He was crabbing about how much DEF he was using until the head salesman sat down with a calculator and showed him that by having higher fuel mileage it was still cheaper to buy the DEF fluid. He is operating the new truck for a lower fuel cost per mile than his old one.

Thought some of you might be interested even though we don't need it for our Rams thank goodness..... Oo.

Good info mwilson! I figured it wouldn't take long for the DEF to be more readily available, however the benefits of not needing it are more useful at this point. I have been reading that these trucks are using much more of the fluid than the dealers are suggesting..... I know-big surprise!

Maybe I will just make my truck a dually a keep mine for awhile longer until the big 3 have mastered the emmisions. ;)

Randy Bourgoin, that's awesome! I really like the American Logger show. He's a real live TV star in my book. Next time you see him, tell him the boys down in VA have a ton of respect for him!

DD16 Detroit, is some serious diesel power. Sounds about right for the kinds of loads those guys are pulling. I'm amazed at the weights every time I watch the show!

Yes, that is quite a crew up there.

Randy just purchased a BRIGHT YELLOW Coronado SD Freightliner.

He should show up quite nicely on HI-DEF TV... ..... :D

Just talked to the sales manager and the ratio of DEF to Diesel in Randy's real world application is 3 gallons DEF per 100 gallons of Diesel Fuel.

I am having a picture of his new truck e-mailed to me and will start a new post for those of you that are interested in what his new truck looks like so I don't hijack this thread. Will put it under "General Diesel Topics".
