03 2500 lost boost

starter won't crank

Need truck bad, tried to start truck the starter cranks a couple of revaluations then stops then repeats with no starting of motor. The dash appears to loose power. After several repeats of it start and stop cranking the reverse light come on and nothing will happen, if you let it set the light will go back to park. I bypassed the start solenoid and the motor cranks fine but no start. New batteries good connections. I swapped relays checked all fuses. With out a good schematic I'm kinda dead in the water. Looking for help and ideas thanks

Seems like your at sensor that tells your ecm what gear your in is malfunctioning (park, reverse, neutral,drive,2 3 4, gear is acting up. I think that is causing your starter run then stop ( could be relay ? )
When it sits for a while the ecm apparently resets. Could be other sensors or other components acting up
Check owners manual to see if or how you get. Codes to come up ( I believe they will show where your odometer is.

Well I tested what I could yesterday and found if I disconnect the starter control wire the ignition work fine. Put volt meter on it it has full voltage on it continuously till the start timer quits. Starter works fine very little drow on that circuit. But the bullet called the wrecker and had it hauled to dealer this morning. I’m finishing up
On this job site this week and need to move to new one 2 1/2 hour away so we will see what kind of stories the dealer will through at me

Well the dealer has had it for 6 days I talked to the service department they tried to tell me the WIN module witch was replaced last week they asked what else I did (why so you can't tell me it needs that part too ) just got off the phone with them now they think it's the PCM can any body tell me if that being fried as they say will have any thing to do with it rolling over . I get it if it rolled over with no start but it rolls over a few times then stops and the dash looks like it resets- glow plug light comes back on etc. also does any body know where to get the PCM tested after they change it? Thanks

I take it the starter turned. Did engine come to life? Was it drivable?
Starter has timer! Is that a seperate module/ computer?.
What ever times the starter seems to be the problem.
But if you can work around it I do it, especally if the engine cranked up.

I've had the same problem with my 98.5 till the satarter just failed. Pulled the starter and replaced w/Larry B's starter brush kit for $35.

Be very cautious of the dealer, unless the Tech is super familiar with your year and Cummins stuff. Most often they pull in and read what's there then start throwing parts. Don't get me wrong, and for any Techs reading this = no offense intended, but it's well known that not many dealerships can afford to have really good Cummins Techs on the payroll. Just saying. There out there but not as many as we'd prefer. I feel sorry for Techs in their 40's who have 20+ years left to work when they start getting in these new fangled Self-Driving/Assisted-Driving autos...... Can't imagine....
