2012 Laramie Dually -- First Tow

Towed our 18,000 lb 5th wheel 249 miles today from Amado, AZ to Deming, NM. Drove from 59-62 mph. Up and down some hills. Over the continental divide. Averaged 9. 5 mpg. Totally a great experience! Did not lack power. Smooth ride. I LOVE THIS TRUCK!!



Tomorrow's tow will be 315 miles to Pecos, TX. It should be a bit more flat land towing. MPG's might be a bit better.



Did I tell you, I LOVE THIS TRUCK!!



The built in brake controller sucks swamp water though. I will be having a Brake Smart or some such installed once we get to the DFW area.

I'm a bit surprised about your brake controller. I had a Max Brake on my last truck which worked real good. I was all set to transfer it to my 2012 but I ended up selling it as I am satisfied with the integrated controller in the new truck. Did you go into the EVIC and set it for EOH disk brakes? I use this setting and if memory is correct I am set on 6. I have towed a few thousand miles with it in most conditions and it performs as it should. I like the rest of the truck, quiet, smooth and nice performance. Enjoy.

I went in to the EVIC and set it as Heavy Electric. I was assuming that I have electric brakes. I do not believe I have hydraulic on the trailer. I will however, set for EOH disk brakes for tomorrow's tow and report back on any differences.

Well, towing day two... ... ... . 315 miles from Deming, NM to Pecos, TX. I thought it would be flatland, but turned out to be more of the same up and down hills and such. Quite a bit of wind also. MPG's while towing were the same as yesterday... . 9. 0.



The brake controller issue was of my own doing. I thought I had selected "heavy electric" yesterday. Turns out I only highlighted it in the EVIC but did NOT select it. So, yesterday's dud brake pedal was due to towing 18,000 lbs while "light Electric" was the brake controller selection. I changed it to EOH heavy today, and was really surprised at how well it did. I had it set at 6. Thanks Slow!!

Wonder if the dealer might be able to upgrade that option one day?

I've asked my dealer to push for that upgrade, if it's a software only situation with no upgraded hardware involved. The more people that push for it, the more chance that it might happen. We'll see, I guess.

Made my first heavy pull with my 2012 Longhorn 3500 this weekend. Our horse trailer is about 16000 lbs, and the truck pulled stronger than our lightly modified '06 3500. One 7% grade is about 4 miles long, and we topped it 11 mph faster than with the '06. Trailer brake controller and jake brake work very well, truck is nice and quiet, and the longhorn has so many extra's that I can't believe it! Stopped on the interstate, we had the opportunity to use the Sirius Traffic feature to tell us why we were stopped (accident ahead),and it worked well! Love the truck. This is our 7th diesel, 3 Fords, and 4 Dodges, and we love them. Never even looked at a Ford since buying our Dodges, though!!
