Buying a 2012/2013

There is talk of DEF in 2013. Should I get a 2012?

I have a 2005 3500 SRW and it has been a good truck but the front end is weak, glad i had an extended warranty, and the AC sucks.

I am thinking 2012 Longhorn Mega Cab 4x4 SRW - fully loaded.

It seems they have the 6. 7 figured out. Should I pull the trigger?

I like my 2012. It seems that as soon as I get a new truck there is something newer around the corner. I bought my 2012 so that I didn't need DEF. I think that DEF is not as much of a problem as we thought it would be but it is just one more thing to deal with. I guess you have to look at how much money you put into your 2005 to keep it going etc. versus the expense of a new truck. The Longhorn is damn nice, we are really happy we got it. My decision was a bit easier as I needed the max tow.

I really want a Mega cab. With 2 kids - the extra room would be a nice plus. I almost traded my truck in 2006 when the Mega came out.

Also, I have to say the features on the new truck are really nice. Remote start, yeah, I know I can go aftermarket. heated and ventilated seat. heated steering wheel, etc.

Have the AC improved? My 2005 won't keep up with a hot Texas summer unless you get it on the highway and get some air moving across it. It has sucked from day 1 and it has been checked multiple times.

Have they checked to make sure the fan clutch is engaging when the A/C is turned on?

I have had limited use of my AC but I know it was definitely way better than my 03 in Arizona this past winter. I only experienced temps in the low 90s but it was cooler and quicker to cool. As for the mega cab that is your choice but I feel the new crew cab is very roomy plus in my opinion a mega cab with the tiny box is not a good unit for towing fivers.

Not sure - I had them check the fan clutch when they did the water pump - it was fine.

Does the fan clutch engagement change with AC on or off?

D.

Ummm I can't say 100% but usually there will be a fan to move air over the condenser otherwise it won't cool, worth looking into.

Engine driven fan - no electrics.

On the mega with SB vs. crew with LB.

I don't have a 5th and don't plan on it. My 24' cattle trailer i have a V nose on it, so the SB is not a problem. If I had a full nose trailer - LB would be the only way to do.

Also, I am considering a ram box and they don't have that on a LB yet.

I tell ya - the Ram dually fenders sure make it hard to get in the bed from the side. I think Ford has them beat there.

You're not kidding they're wide! I have to really reach over or step up on the outer tire to get in from the side. I think the Ram dually fenders look way better than the Ford ones. The Ford ones look like s@*t IMHO. I love my 2012!

How does that work? It is a engine driven fan and I thought the clutch that controlled the engagement was impacted by heat. How would it know if the AC clutch is engaged?

I know on my cars with electric fans, they engage or speed up when the AC is on, but have never seen that with engine driven fan.

I like the way they look, but i am thinking when I have gooseneck trailer hooked up it is going to be hard to get anything in and out of the bed. I am sure I will drop a tow chain right on the top of the fender. Oh well, they are used trucks as soon as you drive them off the lot.

I love my MC for the room it offers (4 kids here) so I didn't have a choice because the 06 and older quad cabs offered no interior space. The new crew cabs are very spacious compared to your 05 and you might want to consider it with the long bed. I get along with the short bed but really find that I need a long bed much more than the space behind the rear seat. If I could only convince myself to do the long bed dually conversion... .....
