Any way to bomb the exhaust brake to stay on?

Has anyone figured out a way to get the 3. 73 gear ratio in a 3500 SRW? The Ram website forces you to choose DRW if you want anything besides the 3. 42 gear ratio. I'd like to get a Crew Cab, 4wd, Aisin equipped truck with 3. 73's.

nope... dont think its happened yet. . at one time, the builder would let you IF you chose certain trim packages but some said it was a website error and you couldnt actually buy it. I tried to build a 3500 SRW 4x4 ccsb laramie longhorn with the aisin and 4:10 gears... cant do it.

Maybe specifically ask a sales manager who does the ordering. I know when I used the website it wouldn't let me configure a truck the way I wanted, yet I was able to find that exact truck the way I wanted sitting on Dave Smith's lot, which is now in my garage.

Matt, the truck mgr. at Saitta Trudeau said the website for ordering (not ramtrucks) wouldn't let you order any ratio except 3. 42 for SRW. I discussed it with the Ram Powertrain Integration Manager and he convinced me that the 3. 42 is good for the SRW Ram 3500, and works with the 17,000 lb. tow rating. You have six transmission speeds, just downshift that auto into first overdrive if needed. Meanwhile, enjoy more fuel mileage and lower engine wear from the lower rpm when not towing heavy.

Would this lower RPM etc add to the soot trap loading up faster? Or did they do away with it? with addtion of the Urea.

Thanx Dr. Donnelly!

I too have concerns about the 3:42 VS the 3:73 as I run 245/70/19. 5s... ... ... ... ... using Rickson's magical whiz wheel calculator, going to the 245s (33. 4") makes an effectual ratio of 3:30 out of the 3:42s. Sure seems tall compared to what we have been use to.

One more thing, anyone have a handle on build time of ordered units? I want to take delivery before the end of the year but want to wait as long as possible to see how much the rebates are going to be... ... .....

Well, more MPG is always welcome. Just a little concerned about pulling heavier loads. Every once in a while I may have a need to pull a trailer which will weigh up to 20,000. Likely not more than twice in a year. The rest of the time I probably won't come close to that and really don't want to have the DRW.

I've got the 3:42 gears in my 13, I have to say with the 800 ft/lbs of tourque the truck has as much if not more get up and go as the 12 with 3:73's that I just replaced. It does seem to lug a bit more but it just goes. Have yet to see it need a lower gear set to get the world moving.

My '14 order was entered into the system on 8/6. It has an estimated delivery to dealer date of 10/9... It got plant released last week and I was told today, that it is supposed to be loaded onto a rail car tonight, @ Saltillo Assembly plant...

I think the delivery date is a crap shoot... . I've seen people order after me, already have their trucks and some order before me, still waiting for it to be built or stuck in storage because they failed inspection. . My truck was stuck in storage for about 1. 5 weeks because of a bad TPMS and needed a tailgate kit... whatever a tailgate kit is... .

I take it you have yet to tow heavy in the mountains out West and at the elevations and density altitudes that we find here.

That is what is great about having a choice, we each get to go with what works best for us.

I have just ordered a 14 3500 with 3. 73 gearing and the aisin transmission. In making the selection I drove two trucks over the same route, one with 3. 42 and the other with 3. 73 gears. The route was in the city at 35 mph with a slight hill and country road at 55 mph. Using light pedal the 3. 42 gears and the transmission hunting back and forth while on the small grade. I chose the 3. 73 gears more to preserve the transmission knowing I would sacrifice some fuel milage. In the past I had a F-150 gasser with 3. 35 gears. It was OK empty but when I would hang a 5K car trailer on the fuel milage was cut nearly in half. Hope this helps making decisions.

I think you are going to be very happy with that combo.

Congrats and please report back with pics when you get the truck :)

With the "just in time" inventories (the parts/components arrive from the vendor/supplier just in time for assembly) used by most automotive assembly plants, and if the vendor supplying the part/component(s) isn't in the "pipeline" for delivery at the factory at the time that particular truck goes down the line, it isn't scheduled. Any delay in the vender's shipment will delay the production of that vehicle still further. There are probably a million of different combinations available building a Ram HD truck which makes it mind boggling...

Just pulled a 19,000# toyhauler 1900 miles, right from dealer with new '14 3500 DRW Aisin, with 3. 73's. Loved it. I think I made the right choice with the 3. 73's.

Nice! What type of toy hauler? One that heavy must be huge?

One more inquiry on your fuel mileage, I know mine isn't that great pulling my big toy hauler.

Voltage 3600, full of 160 gal water, 60 gal gas, Valkyrie with sidecar in the garage, and then food, clothes, helmets, etc. Might be a little under 19k this trip, as not as much stuff as when we go south in Nov.

Over 1900 miles, all but about 275-300 towing, got 9. 16 hand calculated. EVIC said 7. 8 for the whole trip???

Mileage started at 12 from dealer! Hoping a little better when broke in. AWESOME power. Now, I am comparing to a 04 Cummins, not a 11 or 12, but still. I thought the 04 did good, but WOW!

Ah, I have a Voltage 3800, it's amazing how much weight you can stack up on those things in a hurry, by the time you fill the water tank, the fuel tanks, and the propane tanks, you literally have 2,000lbs over the dry weight, then you fill the garage with a couple thousand pounds of toys, fill the fridge with beer and the closets with clothes and you've easily added 5,000lbs, some travel trailers don't even weigh that much! Lol

Then I hook my 6,000lb boat to the back of it.
