2014 3500 With Air Ride

2011 death wobble ?

Thinking on going new, scared of the new coil springs on 2500, I have a 12000lb 5th wheel camper has any body towed a 5th wheel yet with these coils and how is it? Dont like to try things the first year they come out. Thanks for any info.

I've spent a few days now looking very seriously at new trucks. I was really surprised how far Ram has the rear section of the frame narrowed, especially rear of the coil springs on the 2500. I don't have any data on how it will effect the stability with a load directly over the axle, but I am a little leary of it. I have a 1/2 ton with the coils in the back and I have been very impressed with the ride quality, off road traction, etc. but I'm not trying to load that truck with a trailer of that weight either.

When I pull the trigger, it will be some form of a 3500.

There is a very lengthy post going in several places on the internet with a Lance Camper and RAM buying back of trading out a 2500 with coils. I content that with a 5th wheel trailer at the 2500 max ratings on a down hill off camber corner that the driver is going to have a handful to handle. Even the 3500 air suspension has the air bags way inboard on the axle and may have issues with a tall load.

I think of the 2500 they did this for ride quality to allow a wheel to walk thru or over a bump without sending it right into to frame.

I see PEOPLE! People having problems!

I sure would not want to be first!!!!!!!

I just passed the 500 mile mark on my 2014 2500, just did a run from Sacramento to San Francisco and back. I've had 2 prior 2500, CTD and the ride of the new truck is much much improved. With or w/o the airbags on my prior trucks. The frame is very ridged and rebound is great on poor bouncy freeways. I've have yet to tow my 5th travel trailer or king pin race car trailer. Still Saving $$$. The hitch is a small fortune!! I've been told the all new front suspension, that was copied from Ford was intended to offset the leaning issues with the rear coils. Unloaded the truck stays very flat in a corner at speed compared to my 2003. I don't see an issue with a goose or 5th wheel, but a tall bed camper, hmmmm ? Only time will tell. FYI, the rear shocks are pretty far outside, the frame rails are bowed out and the shocks extend through the frame!!! Hence why a traditional 5th wheel set up will not work.... Good luck...

I too have read about a Lance owner that is not pleased with the 2500 coil springs.

My guess with the Lance camper he is way overloaded. A new 2500 crew cab, 4x4, long bed only has a 2100# payload. A small Lance camper could weigh 3,000#. If he is over his payload, Ram is not responsible, coils or not.

We bought a nice, older 9' overhead camper with a GVW of 1800#, installed it on my '91 D-250 regular cab with air bags. The guy we bought it from had a 1/2 ton Chevy and he said it was too heavy for it. We were like, no problem, my Dodge will pack it. Wrong! We used it once and re-sold it to a guy with a 1/2 ton short bed Chevy,

Yep, he already had the camper, a little research would have saved a lot of headaches. So many people pulling big fifth wheels
and hauling big campers seem to have an aversion to driving a dually. They are a PIA to park, but you can't beat them for big loads.

We put a 11" Lance camper on our 93 W250 and it handle like ***** until I install a good set of shocks. I had 10x16.5 or something like that for tires on wide wheels. Chris

I haven't towed anything yet, didn't really buy the truck for that anyway. I was happy to hear the rear coils were supposed to ride better, and at the same time have a higher weight carrying rating...........BUT...... Any advantage to the coils and their softer ride is erased if you have to run 80 psi in the rears.

I agree with Joe and Chris. Don't mess with getting the 2500 and worrying about how it will handle. Get the 3500 and know you will be able to tow and carry what you want. You won't regret it.

Just purchased a 2014 ram 2500 Laramie. B&W hitch is awesome but pricey.Pulls our new cougar 313 RLI with ease. No squat at all. Trailer ways around 10,000 pounds.

I can comment some first hand knowledge about coils on the FRONT of a 2500. I'm actually pretty disappointed. I just installed a Boss V plow (HEAVY) on the front of mine. In comparing it to my old '02 2500, the old one handled the plow MUCH better. I would carry the plow on the old truck with the edges in VEE mode about 3 inches off the ground (would carry it that low on the highway to get good airflow thru the radiator to prevent the engine fan from coming on all the time) Anyway, carrying it that low it would rarely if ever scrape on bumps around town. Fast forward to the new truck, lifted as high as the plow will go (edges about 6" off the ground) it scrapes ALL the time, so bad in fact I have to open the blade up to more of a straight position to prevent it from scraping. You can feel the suspension CONSTANTLY bottoming out. It's bad enough to be deemed unacceptable, if I wasn't doing full air suspension, I would put 3500 springs in the front.

Without the plow on, but obviously the 200lb or so mount installed, it changed the front end enough that you can still feel it bottoming out all the time. Turned a good riding truck into an uncomfortable truck just by adding 200lbs to the front end. Something to keep in mind for those of you adding bumpers, winches, grille guards, etc. I'm REALLY surprised and disappointed how big of a difference it made in the ride.

Grocery Get'r or Real Truck!!! Riding like a car and hauling are to different things. Chris
