I have a '97 12 valve 5.9 I bought it new, has about 400k on it now. After I shut the truck off, it will syphon about half the oil in the filter back into the engine, in about an hour or so. This is nice if you have the time to let it sit, and allows you to lay the filter over quite a bit without spilling. I do have a '14 now, and was wondering if they work the same way? If so, I might be able to lay it over enough to pull it out the side of the access hole when I do the first change.
When I did my first oil change, the filter still had about 1/2 to 2/3rds oil in it. That is only after 30 minutes of letting the truck sit. When I pre-filled my filter, I filled it about half-way figuring that it would be the same fill-up time as it typically has since it does siphon so much oil out of the filter. At work, our practice is to pre-fill the filters on a diesel so I've been conditioned to do the same with my home rigs if its practical (you guys have a point on inverted and sideways filters) If you're going to use the side access, you will still spill a bit out of the filter when grabbing it out through the side. It's just really really tight to get the filter out in that direction. For the first oil change, I actually disconnected the intake hose and pulled it out through the top, I found that side entry video later after I already did my oil change and will try it next month. Then I'll be on an August/February oil change schedule. or maybe I'll move it back and make it a September/March oil change schedule.
