Howdy,

New RAM 2500 w/ 3900 miles. Engine check light on. Took to local dealer. Code U3017. Dodge dealer states they cannot execute fix because there is "no fix" to date. I asked if they have seen this before, and they said "yes." No build for it. So, what happens if something else triggers check engine....I will never know it. Input appreciated.

My check engine light came on the day after I bought the truck. They did a software update a few weeks later and I've had no issues since. If something happens on your engine that is serious, you'll know because the engine may enter de-rate or check engine light will flash. You may also get notification on the EVIC. Drive it!

A tsb was released on oct 7 to address this issue,18-053-14 IIRC

I had two U codes shortly (within 1000 miles) after purchase. I cleared them myself and they haven't returned in 12,000 miles. I read here this seems to be a common thing with the new trucks. An early CEL then gone for good. I wouldn't be too worried about it.

How do you clear the codes without voiding warranty?

If your truck is a 2014 2500-3500 the flash is out as of the TSB date of October 7. The only flashes remaining are 2013 trucks and will be available in November. Just have your dealer do the flash.

Received a call from RAM support after RAM INITATED a ticket AND contacted the dealership. There is another bulletin, apparently, that JUST came out referring to this. At this time they were reserved to say there was a flash for it, but it is on one of RAMS front burners. Oo.

Trust me, the TSB would not be online if the flash was not available. Neither the call center or your dealer can tell you if you need the update because until the truck is scanned they have no idea of what software level is in it. Just go see your dealer.

No fix for u3017 10.30.14

UPDATE 10.30.14: THERE IS NO FIX FOR U3017. Maybe in November Im told. The previous TSB do not work and I have had it there twice now. I've called around to other dealers also. RAM "CARE" (they seem 'NOT' too) has me running in circles back and forth to the dealer....and keep telling me how much they are "supporting" me. The dealer's hands are tied until RAM issues the proper software fix. It's an "I've got a secret" scenario. Now...NOW! RAM CARE says it's in the EPA's hands, after being told this from my dealer, and I had to push hard to get that answer out of RAM Care. There are 3 other trucks at this dealer for same problem, one just left after 45 days of refusing to take it until it was fixed.

This is my first RAM truck.....they need to take care of the people buying these products and quit the smoke screens.

With just over 10,000 miles on the odometer, my truck just popped this DTC and illuminated the MIL yesterday morning at startup.

Does anyone have the text of TSB 18-053-14 which they can post here? I'm just curious to see what it says.

Thanks,

John L.

Found this under chapter 28 of the factory service manual (DTC-Based Diagnostics / MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM), 6.7L Diesel / Diagnosis and Testing)

U3017-CONTROL MODULE TIMER/CLOCK PERFORMANCE

When Monitored:

This diagnostic runs continuously with the ignition on provided the block heater is not detected and we have a minimum 18 degree F (10 degree C) coolant temperature drop and power-down coolant temperature is greater than or equal to 169.88 F (76.6 degrees C).

Set Condition:

The BCM engine ignition off time is too high or low for the coolant temperature drop observed over the key cycle.

Possible Causes

(RECENTLY) REPROGRAMMED POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)
(RECENTLY) REPROGRAMMED BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM)
COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR
BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM)

Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).

Diagnostic Test

1.DTC P2509 PRESENT

NOTE: If you see this DTC after the BCM or PCM module has been reflashed, clear the DTC and test drive the vehicle.
NOTE: If there are any coolant temperature sensor DTC’s present, perform the Diagnostics for those DTCs before continuing with this one.

1. Ignition on, engine not running.
2. With a scan tool read DTCs.

Is DTC P2509 present at this time?

Yes

•When U3017 is set in conjunction with P2509, it is usually caused by disconnecting the Battery before allowing the normal 10 minute power down. Clear the DTCs and test drive.
•Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).

No

•Go To 2

2.(RECENTLY) REPROGRAMMED MODULE

Were the PCM or BCM recently Reprogrammed?

Yes

•This fault has the potential to set if the PCM or BCM are reprogrammed. Clear the DTC and test drive.
•Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).

No

•Go To 3

3.COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR

1. Remove the Coolant Temperature Sensor and reconnect the wiring to the sensor.
2. Turn ignition on.
3. Monitor the Scan Tool while heating the sensor with an external heat source (DO NOT USE OPEN FLAME).

Does the reading from the Coolant Temperature Sensor increase at least 3°C (5°F) on the Scan Tool?

Yes

•Go To 4

No

•Replace the Coolant Temperature Sensor in accordance with the service information.
•Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).
4.COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR

1. Let vehicle cold soak for eight hours.
2. Turn the ignition on.
3. With a scan tool, monitor the Ambient Air Temperature Sensor, the Turbo Compressor Inlet Temperature Sensor, and the Coolant Temperature Sensor.

NOTE: Make sure the Ambient Air Temperature is above —7°C (20°F).

NOTE: Make sure there is no external heat source, such as a block heater, operating during this test or within the 8 hour cold soak.

Does the Coolant Temperature Sensor read more than a 10°C (18°F) above or below the other sensors?

Yes

•Replace the Coolant Temperature Sensor in accordance with the service information.
•Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).

No

•Replace the Body Control Module in accordance with the service information.
•Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).

STATUS UPDATE 11.06.14 - The dealer rep has reaffirmed that they are in contact (with the actual engineer that wrote the new flash) and is in the hands of the EPA for approval, since someway somehow the new flash - affects emissions. They were hoping that it would be this week, if not then next week.

The dealer mentioned that another 2014 truck came in (mileage unknown) and it was being illuminated within the 'messages' without CEL.

RAM care has not been in contact to follow-up, and has provided ZERO assistance in addressing the issue. I have had to initiate the follow-up without success.

Dillwinkle,
I have a new 2014 Tradesman 2500 with 3500 miles on it. Last week, the CEL came on AGAIN so I went back to my local Dodge dealership to see what is the matter now. They downloaded the Code U3017. They could not work on it right then so I had to make an appointment for next week to have work done on this NEW problem.
Just two weeks ago they had to replace the Amonia Sensor Module because it kept popping a CEL and they did a computer reflash update.
I read what JLandry wrote regarding this code and will present it at my next appointment. My New truck has been to the dealership four times already because of CEL/computer glitches. I hope Dodge gets their act together real soon.
I am following your post with interest.

Almost glad I did not drop the extra $8k on a Cummins on my 14 (not really).

Welcome to the age of complete computer controls and emissions. I have 10 new pieces of heavy equipment at work that will pop a code and get all twitchy if it senses something remotely wrong.

UPDATE 11.11.14 - Thank you to all my brothers and sisters who faithfully served our country.

The flash was released on 11.11.14 - my truck was there and there were other updates including turbo and transmission. The CEL was off and....AND....without thinking about it, I noticed that it ran more efficiently and even accelerated different. After 2 hours on the road, my mileage even crept up. When I take it out this afternoon, I will post if the CEL or other issues appear.

Greetings fellow Dodge 2014 Owners with U3017 code issues,

I went to my Dodge dealership yesterday to take care of the CEL because of the activated Code U3017. I was told that because I recently had a "Re-programmed ECM" to the latest updates #32350230-AI (Oct.17th) that were available at the time, that this can trigger a CEL to come on with a U-3017 code because the ECM was re-programmed. I hope this makes sense. The Dodge diesel mechanic followed the diagnostic procedures outlined earlier in this post, then cleared the code. It was just a computer glitch, activating that annoying CEL.
Time will tell if the problem has been rectified. Is there anyone with a similar circumstance?
