Hi all, I have a 2014 ram 3500 diesel that seems to be prone to having issues from, axle seal leaks, radio quit working, rear door lock quit working, wiper spray nozzels broke off and a wierd problem with a water in the fuel warning. Yesterday the engine light came on with a service def system at the dealer message. This truck only has 37,000 miles on it and was wondering if these def systems are prone to problems. We had had a lot of cold weather, snow and 4x4 slow driving on icy roads, could this cause it? My dealer usually takes 2-3 weeks to get me in and I have not heard back from them yet. I am sure the truck will go into a limp mode after a while, is that true? Any advice on easy things to check? Thanks for any thoughts.

Yes they are prone to DEF issues real or not. Mine has had two episodes. Is your truck in a countdown mode to the 5 mph. limp mode, it will tell you about every mile, it will pop up on the screen, and at some point on mine it stayed on the screen.

First one was " Service DEF system see dealer, was on the screen long enough to read, and went away. No CEL. Second episode got the warning, got the CEL , and got the mile countdown to the 5 mph limp mode. At the 80 mile mark on the countdown everything went away, other then the CEL.

Got to a dealer to be checked out, the CEL was P207F ,bad DEF. DEF was checked and was okay. Code ,and CEL was cleared, and I was sent on my merry way. In other words no actual problem other then a very touchy system .

Here is an issue thats seems to be common, when filling the DEF tank it triggers a system check, which in my case triggers a warning ,and CEL.Was told by two different techs, don't fill the DEF tank. Both my episodes happened a few miles AFTER filling the tank, from now on I will add the 2.5 gallons at 1/4 tank instead of at 1/2 tank. Hopefully that will solve my DEF non issues

Thanks for the reply, I fill my def same as you. My tech told me to take it to 1/4 tank then add 2.5 gals. He also said to check the date code to try and get the newest batch I can. I had a code that said unknown def system fault (could be fun for the tech). I hope it resets on its own as they can't get me in until the 19th. I hope this ends soon, it's been less then 2,000 miles since it was in the shop last and we have not hit 40k yet on the truck. The shop did tell me sometimes these things freak out in bad weather and that it's possible it goes away on it's own, not with my luck I told him. Thanks again.

Seems to be the common theme on these trucks . Apparently you have not gone into the countdown prior to the limp mode ? But got a CEL ?

I have not started the count down yet, did get the service message and engine light.

I didn't get the countdown right away, it started at 120 miles on the countdown. I think they actually start at 150 miles, so I had went 30 miles before it showed on the screen , although I had the CEL ,and the stored message .

Apparently there is a TSB on them when it does this, but the dealer I got into, didn't say anything about it. When I got home the dealer where I bought it told me about it, but couldn't do anything because the code ,and the CEL were cleared. They said if it did it again get in to them, and could do the TSB. Both times I have been out of town.

Did you clear the code when you were out of town? The dealer you took it to when you were out of town the 1rst time would of cleared the code. Your dealer should be able to bring it up with scanner/code reader.

No I got to an out of town dealer, they checked it out, found nothing wrong, cleared the CEL, and the code.

Thats what I thought, but I guess the issue was, and not knowing any different, they told me it had to have an active CEL , and code before they could do anything. I bought in. If in fact there is something they can do I will have another conversation with them. So far no more issues

Going to Arizona mid Feb., with fifth wheel in tow, we will see how it goes. Truck has been pretty sitting since the DEF problem.

I will let you know, the truck is in count down mode (144 miles and counting)! The truck goes in later this week to be looked at. Thanks again.

For the def message to be on there had to be a code that was set.The code may have gone to a stored status.Sounds like the dealer did not have a tech with a clue or was too lazy to fix it.You should have a new style scr cat and be sure the software is up to date at the minimum. This should all be covered under warranty unless you have restrictions

Bob4x4,

I was told when i took my truck in yesterday that even though i am under extended warranty, that i have to pay $33 per flash for flashes (that are considered optional). I am past the basic 3/36 bumper to bumper warranty, but have Mopar Max Care for 7/70. Maybe because I have $100 deductible is why i have to pay? They will do the flash for the SCR when they get rid of the old one with the NH3-NH4 sensor. But there is an ABS update/flash, a PCM update and an IPC update that they say isn't really necessary. Do you recommend these?

There was a code, it was P207F Bad DEF . Yes it was stored. They checked the DEF it was okay. As said they cleared the codes ,and CEL.

IMO, and we will see ,but I think I got a touchy emission system, and no real problem. I will try what was suggested, and not fill the DEF to trigger the system check, both my episodes were a few miles after filling.

You are saying I have the new SCR cat or I should be getting a new one, I know I don't have the newer cat. ??

Hi all, I got the truck back from the shop today, it turned out to be a bad connector on the def module. They replaced it and all started working again, I hope it stays that way.
