I think he was being facetious......but you have to admit, running an extra quart of oil "just to be different" is a really odd thing to do....so it deserves a bit of mockery. :-laf

I could just see it at a car show:

~bunch of car guys at a car show~
Hank: "Hey Bob, look at this quintuple turboed 859 cid Hemi in this Gremlin.........Bob?"
Bob: (in a crowd of car guys surrounding TC's truck) "Hank, forget about that thing, come look at this engine, HE RUNS AN EXTRA QUART OF OIL!"
Car Guys: "oooooooh, aaaaaaah, now that's thinking outside the box!"

My comment was absurd. I apologize if it seemed disrespectful. I was being facetious.

I have learned something from this thread. It IS OK to run a quart over. I didn't know that before because some Japanese makes have been frothing over with too much oil. Or the oil won't flow right due to back pressure.

I actually probably have been changing my oil a bit too soon trying to keep my oil level down with a minor about of fuel dilution. I've never let it get an inch over. But now I know it isn't a concern if I'm 1/2-3/4 inch over the full mark.

Except during the warranty period...... I will try not to let the oil get too high due to what Snoking posted that is in the owners manual. Even if the failure isn't related to oil level, they could still try to deny warranty???????

You can do everything right and they can still try to bone you. In addition to the 3500 I have a 2011 gmc terrain for my wife that I personally put an engine in at 92k. I always had that car serviced at the dealer as I was overseas a lot up until a year ago. Long story short they "fixed" the cars numerous engine problems under warranty 3 months ago and then 4k miles later it has no oil pressure and they want 2000 bucks just to figure out what's wrong. And this was a measly 4 banger..I can only imagine what they would say if it was a Cummins.

The oil level window, from full to add, is determined by the manufacturer. They consider all extremes when determining the safe level. If you hit the brakes hard going down a hill with low oil level you can cavitate the oil pickup and loose oil pressure. If your way over full windage can be an issue and or crankshaft collision with high oil. I think there is enough safety factor built into the high and low limits as to not have to worry too much. As for the overfill some guys who have motors that use oil will slightly overfill so they don't need to add oil before the next change. My dealer usually overfills slightly.

apgambino, did you check the oil pressure manually or do have an oil pressure gauge? Lot of dishonest dealer and private shops. The only real problem with dealer shop was when they had private window installer put a the front windshield in ( cracked under warranty) Bill Linns ( spelling?) helped with me with that because the 2nd windshield cracked also. It did take me to get back to the dealer on it (but I was running the heck out of Mule.) Well the service writer said they could do nothing about it. So I called may insurance agent and they sent out a window installer.
With Bill's info asked why the window cracked again and that after the first replacement had wind noise coming from the passenger side. He opened the door and pushed on the window it came out. he then opened the divers door and pushed at the top of the window where had crackjed the widow came out. He said the same thing that Bill said they did a quick job. He didn't. The window many years got hit by rock on the highway called agent and told send the same company they did before. No problems with it, and I got better at dodging rocks thrown back by cars and vans.

The other problem was the dang gophers would put Mule in 4 wheel drive when they brought up to the waiting room. I had very polite conservation with the service manager that it better never be put in 4 wheel drive again with out my permission. Soon after I decided have It serviced/worked on by shops where my business was.

I took it back to the dealer once my wife told me she heard the engine making a lot of noise. I checked it out and it was all in the top end of the motor. The dealer told me I had 55 psi at the oil pump and 12 up top. I think the dealer did what they could but had their hands tied by GM.
