Within the last month or so, I've had a intermittent loss of power, but only noticeable in the following scenario. This is on my 2015 with 13k miles. The fuel filters were replaced a couple weeks ago.

I have two fairly steep grades on the highway to my work. When I first got the truck in Oct, I was always amazed at how it never needed to shift out of OD like all my other vehicles do when climbing this grade. I typically set the cruise at 72 mph and everything is peachy. Recently however, it has started to slow down to roughly 65 mph then it shifts down to 5th then catches up just fine. At first it only did this once in a while, then it started to do it once every time I climbed the grade.

Today, it did it multiple times on each grade: slow down, shift down and speed up and shift back to 6th, then slow down and down shift again. This morning I noticed that while in 6th and beginning to slow down, boost would not increase like it usually does, it stayed at the same level (probably 10-ish psi), however once it shifted down into 5th, it went up into the 20's. It has likely been doing this the whole time I've had the issue, I just paid attention today.

Yesterday, I towed my new 5th wheel for about 2 hours total, not sure if that is related or not. I was thinking maybe its time for a new air filter, but wouldn't I receive a message on the EVIC about the filter needing to be replaced long before I noticed a performance loss?

Inspect & evaluate your air filter. It's only 3 screws to remove from the airbox. Any chance you've purchased some less than quality fuel?? It might not hurt to drain both fuel filters and see if there's any chance of water being present.

At the May Madness rally this year, I believe it was the Cummins rep who commented that by the time you get an EVIC message about a dirty air filter, it's REALLY filthy and should've been replaced long before that point. In other words, check and/or replace the air filter regularly and don't wait for the EVIC message. How often to check depends on the environment where you operate, but probably at a minimum check it each oil change.

Thanks for the info lads, I will replace the filter then.

If anyone has any other ideas aside from the air filter....please share.

I think the fuel quality is unlikely as I have bought fuel from several different sources while I've had this issue. Plus, when this first started, my fuel filters had about 17% life left, so I thought I might as well go ahead and change them, but there was no change, so I doubt it is fuel filter/water in fuel related.

Interesting, I think I experienced lower turbo boost (than i expected to get) in 6th gear last month pulling a trailer. Wasn't sure if it was torque management on the detuned G56 equipped model, or something else.

I might need to check my air filter as well. I expected to get 30,000 out of it. But looks like I may be getting only 16,000 miles out of it. Have driven by some construction sites where they were kicking up dust. Also, some dirt roads camping.

From the size of the exhaust pipes on these diesels, it's obvious that they push through more air than the gassers I'm more accustomed to.

Changed the air filter and did a test run on my normal route, it ran just peachy, however, as I mentioned before it has been intermittent, so I won't get too excited until it works fine several times in a row.

On the trucks with the fancy valve in the air box you will find a flexible duct above the right front fender liner that can suck up debris and get plugged or colapse if it has seen enough moisture It may or may not trip a dtc-I nave seen it both ways

Is the flexible duct long? I see it goes in front of the battery and I see a drop down door over the wheel well. But not sure what I'm looking for

I see it. It goes between the battery and fender. It's black and accordian-like about 2.5 -3 inches in diameter. It appears to be in 2 pieces with a short metal pipe to keep it from collapsing. Mine's not collapsed, so I think its fine. I think I can get to it if need be by removing the battery.

I have a question regarding the filter. I have a new filter for my old 2004.5 and it is exactly the same dimensions as the new 2015 filter and fits in the air box perfectly. They have different part numbers, so I assume there is some difference. Does anyone know if I could run the 2004.5 filter in my 2015. Maybe the 2015 filter has a finer micron filtering capability?

I have the same question about the oil filter. A friend who sold his '98 Ram 2500 gave me 4 left over filters

BTW, His truck had 490,000 miles on it and the truck was falling apart around the engine. In my opinion he abused it to.

If the Stratapore filter you can use it on all years.

What brand are they......and more importantly....how OLD are they???

Here are 2 of them. Slight bit of rust on the base, but the insides look clean. They are in their original Mopar individual boxes.

I don't think the rust will affect it too much. I will wipe most of the rust off.

I have the amsoil bypass filter for extra filtration. The seals are in good shape.

They are likely 7-10 years old. I think he traded in his Ram 4 years ago for a diesel liberty.

Those things are ready for the trash heap!!!! NO WAY they'd go on MY truck....with or without a by-pass oil system. :--)

U r prolly right. I'll make that decision later. If the threads have rust, they may be no good.
What's "prolly" ??? In any event.....that same filter runs $13.47 plus tax at about any WalMart. I just don't see the "savings" in using those rusted basket cases......as would 99.9999% of the remaining TDR members.
