2016 Ram, stick shift, owned since new.
Driving early this week, noticed hesitation on take-off, taking off from a stop and giving it fuel would seem to hesitate after leaving out. About a 1/8 of a mile from my house to crossing the highway, is a typical route, trucked seemed to lie down (like what I imagine with some folks describing a dead pedal issue) when getting across the intersection. Later in the week, noticed the hesitation a bit more, did it a couple of times, where I'm at, going into town will likely stop every mile or so, seemed more noticeable every day. Let's say this started on Monday. After a couple of miles, didn't notice the issue, seemed to run great; only happened when starting off. Boost seems fine, exhaust brake works same as ever.
Thursday, needed to drive across town, had the previous symptoms. Had driven maybe 4 miles, took off and had a bit of hesitation, and noticed in my side mirror a bit of gray smoke. Drove a couple of more miles to the destination, checked the tailpipe and yes it is now black. Pretty sure it was clean, at least a few weeks ago, had a low tire on the rear passenger side, I think I would have noticed when I was checking for the puncture. Didn't have any issues on the return trip.
Let the truck idle for a bit on Thursday, after arriving home, did a walk around and looked underneath. Can say the only thing out of the ordinary was the lack of the DEF injector (or pump?) ticking, which is usually very noticeable (even over the normal Cummins sounds). Saying that because I usually stop at the end of the driveway on my way home to get the mail and hear it, did listen, during the walk around, at a different spot (closer to the barn) so don't take that as conclusive. Snapped the throttle a couple of times, minutes between, saw a small cloud of gray smoke each time.
No CEL. I have AlfaOBD, no codes indicated; didn't find anything else unusual with the tool or attempting to graph some items. Definitely not an expert with AflaOBD; only got it to fix the TPMS gripe with my truck.
So, before I jump to the conclusion that the DEF injector is failing and is pouring into the exhaust and cracked the hot DPF, would appreciate any tips or similar experiences. Truck is at almost at 6 years old, AFAIK even for related emissions, and has no extended warranty; so won't be going to the dealer, unless I'm mistaken.
Thanks!
