I was thinking on replacing my 68FRE to 3500 Allison transmission same year 2017 2500 6.7. Will it hook right up or will there be some mods. I found a few from 1500 to 2000 for my year. Not worried about the conduction since their bullet proof. Hate the 68RFE. Its banging between 3 & 4. when I reach 32-39 I have to let up the on the pedal so it shifts smoothly. Thank god I don't do any heavy hauling. Later I was also thinking on putting Highway gears since I don't use it for hauling for better mileage. Any info would be appreciated.

Pretty huge investment to get it all working and if you cant defuel the engine between shifts the Allison will be far from bulletproof. Have you looked into a well built 68RFE for a fraction of the cost? There are a number of companies out there that can build a stout 68 now.

The AISIN is ok, but I really think it should have two more gears with how efficient the Cummins power band is.

I don't care how it "feels", because it's a heavy duty diesel truck.

Supposedly next year will be new transmissions.

Are you asking about an Allison swap? Or an Aisin swap?

If it’s an Allison swap then ATS is the only place I know of making a plug and play kit.

For an Aisin swap you may be on your own, I haven’t heard of that one yet. Should be doable with some custom ECM tuning and likely wiring. The Aisin has a stand alone controller, unlike the 68RFE.

Allison’s are not as bulletproof as the internet wants you to believe, but the Aisin’s are very very stout.

Lastly, the 2017 6.7 2500’s all had 3.42’s in them and those are “highway” gears.

You will spend way too much time and money to stuff a Allison 3500 in that truck. The 1000/2000 series will fit but way spendy considering what you get. Cheaper to fix the 68RFE.

Yes 3.42's and a 68RFE is a good match for cruising mileage, all other things being equal.

Unless he has the truck delteted and/or tuned. The 68RFE is great in a stock truck, but does not take to more power very well. Hence the Aisin in the HO.

I liked that combo in my 18 2500. I'd be happy if my 22 2500 had the same 3.42's. Keeps the RPM's down a little on the highway.

The 58 can be built to handle moderate power increases, the AISIN has little support for power upgrades and is pretty much maxxed out at stock levels. Still cheaper to upgrade the 68 than build an Allison to hold un-torque managed Cummins power.

OP wasn't asking about the AISIN anyway, he specifically called and Allison 3500 which is a totally different animal.

I suspect the OP meant Aisin (from a 3500) and thought that it was an Allison, which is pretty common… certainly more common than trying to put an Allison 3500 into a Ram.

Maybe he’ll come back and eliminate the confusion.

Potentially, that is probably true. An Allison conversion is a lot more commonly talked about and more than once have seen threads about something other than a baby Allison as a swap.
