Yes, if you're pulling that much and frequently, the 4.10's are a good choice. As for the shifting, I notice that my 18 is rougher than my 14 was, both 4.10's and Aisin. If you hesitate while in the lower gears, 1-3, by backing off the throttle a bit too much and then get into it again I notice that sometimes it can seem confused and have a lag or a harsh shift. Normal unfortunately so you just have to get used to it and you learn to drive in a manner that avoids this. The Aisin is more than worth these glitches though for durability otherwise.
And always use the tow/haul and e-brake, empty or loaded.
Just curious as I’m still learning my 2018 3500, what is the advantage of using tow/haul mode driving while empty?

Conservatively for ME at 60k with 1/2 miles solo. I would be getting 4 mpg better with 3.42’s. Not chump change.

The 3.42’s in 5th perform exactly the same as 4.10’s in 6th. Both are around 1,750 rpm at 60.

What do you mean would? Does that mean you haven’t ? Just supposition? And you’re ignoring the fact the op said loaded 90% . Not half.

Some people like the shift characteristics of the Aisin better in Tow/haul. It adjusts shift points and holds gears longer.

I like the shifting better in general and I hardly use the foot brake. On my 2014 I sold it with 157,000kms on it and the front pads were at 8mm and the rears were still at 9mm, originals. My 07.5 made it to about 175K on the hem pads as well.

My 2014 RAM 3500 Tradesman Crew Cab DRW (with those compromise 3.73 gears) was still running on OEM friction material front and rear when I traded it in at 362K miles.

hahaha...funny ...I'm so use to Cummins12V98 just saying the same thing every time :) I'm glad my "compromised" 3.73 didn't come up :)

I'm not say he is wrong....but I'm not say he is right :)

I cannot figure out WHY 3.73 / 4.10 is NOT available for SRW Pickup.

If 3.73 would have been available with SRW trucks, I most likely would have made the mistake of getting them. Given the weight rating specs of the SRW 3500, there is no reason for lower gears if you opt for the Aisin transmission. For the 68RFE with taller first and second gear maybe. But anyone towing at the max rating should be going for the Aisin anyway. I tow at 24,500 combined in Western states and they work just great tow in low 60 MPHs in 5th.

Bobtail at 80 and 1750 RPM's is sweet. We ran over to Palm Springs and back in Nov. Fighting head winds at 75 was 19+ MPG. Coming home with not wind at 78 MPG was 19+. All this after 14 years on 4:10's behind a RE-47 and I think I have gone to heaven without dying.

I read that too . No 3.42 gearing option on the new trucks . I wonder why the design engineers would do away with them . Just 3.73 and 4.10 options for heavy duty .

I've only pulled my 12k 5th wheel about 60 miles on flat roads. My 18 3500 SRW with Aisin and 3.42's does lug itself. In a gear or two. I'd of been more comfortable with 3.73 gearing, especially with the two od gears. Shortly I will be towing it 150 miles through Pennsylvania mountains and hills. I should be able to notice which gear(s) it lugs in. I am in tow/haul mode. I run that all the time as without, it lugs the crap out of the engine.

So I just watched the TFL video on the 2019 ram and they say there is a new computer in the Aisin trans curious to see how it performs.

Unless of course, you want slightly better towing performance.... especially if you don't have a self imposed speed limit of 60 mph....but even at 60 mph, 5th will be more useful with 3.73's.

NO way a 3.73 will perform better at 60 in 5th than 3.42's in 5th pulling a grade. Or is "useful" a different meaning than what i am thinking it is?

You must not be as much fun to give I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER to even tho we say mostly the same things.

Wait, really? You don't know how lower gearing can help pull a grade? Go hop on a bicycle and climb a hill in a high gear (numerically low), then shift down once and do it again. Which gear was easier to climb in?

Your RPM's will be higher and NOT hold the grade as long. I am discussing what YOU said.
