18 with aisin, I run in tow/haul all the time. I use the exhaust brake all the time in full on. Unless coming down mountains I use auto to maintain a certain road speed. I like the aggressive down shifting and braking. Saves my truck brakes and trailer brakes when towing it. The exhaust braking with the tow/haul off is too weak for me.

Yes but not out on the road. I guarantee it’s no different than my truck.
I know it was most definitely different, at least initially, because some of the hotshotters were complaining how overly aggressive the new trucks were versus their prior year HO/Aisins when the '19s came out. One of the early reflashes actually backed down the aggressiveness some.

I did, the first 1000 miles, but the Aisin downshifting in T/H and EB is to aggressive for me. I only run in T/H because it keeps the RPM's perfect for the CTD, but is aggressive in downshifting, add the EB to that and it is annoyingly aggressive.

Do you mean specifically when you are towing or unloaded driving? Or both?

I have found at least when towing and when descending steep grades....more so when they are curvy, that Auto EB works much better. So much smoother and less frequent downshifting and upshifting. This also allows for a little bit of brake application too....so all 8 tires can contribute to slowing down the rig....instead of just two.

I use the EB pretty much every time I use the truck, but not the TH. TH is very aggressive in my ‘18. The Aisin and Cummins combo takes this very seriously and can be harsh when empty. Although it drives fine, you just don’t need this level of excitement from an empty truck.

WUSSIES :D

I guess I will have to go test drive one. Mine is very aggressive with the 4.10's but I like it!

Try using your cruise control and control speed with your up and down button. Lock the gear you want. It works great!

It would be nice if the Aisin could turn off T/H when downshifting, with a T/H upshift only button. :D
Personally for unloaded I would prefer the other way. T/H upshift points don't align well with Phoenix traffic a lot of the time but I miss the aggressive braking when in regular mode.

I use full EB when I get out on the freeway only... It's too much on surface streets when driving under 40mph. T/H is good when loaded... When empty the shifts are harder. The 2019 F250 I owned for 8 days had EB that barely was noticeable... You had to use the brakes in order for the EB to kick in...

I like the RPM shift points even when driving slow loaded or unloaded with T/H, it won't shift up to a higher gear keeping the RPM's near the sweet spot when being easy on the throttle. 4:10's would be better, but the 3:73's I have, due to SRW 3500, sure beats 3:42 I would have with a 2018 and older. In fact I wouldn't have bought a SRW if the 3:42 was the only ratio. The truck has only 500 miles towing near its GCVWR, and it did great, in that case I have the EB is on all the time. I like the strategy of the T/H loaded or unloaded. In "D" (not in T/H) it wants to shift to the highest gear it can get into, regardless of the RPM, causing it to be doggy and delayed throttle response. I turn on the EB with extended running over 60MPH.

Sweet spot for what?

The decrease in fuel economy when empty in T/H is enough to tell you that the motor is reving above the "sweet spot". TH is perfect for that mode, towing and hauling. It runs the engine much higher in the rpm band than needed when empty... this is a 6.7 with a VGT afterall, not a 5.9 with a fixed turbo.

AH always loaded I tow rather large 28' beast of boat 9' wide on triple axle trailer as in California 55mph and CHP is on there high horse to tag for speeding.
Recently was stopped and told to drive 10 miles to the CHP scales for inspection and weight check, DOT was doing the inspection.

For something like that you will likely find the best power and economy with TH engaged. Empty you would likley find the best economy with TH off. I lose at least 1 mpg running TH on my commute to work, that tells me that the engine isn't running where it should be for that load and it's just wasting fuel turning additional rpms.

I'll admit I was VERY skeptical of 3.42's before getting some miles on this truck. I had planned to swap the gears for 4.10's but that's a distant memory now. The 3.42's and the 6.7 work together very well, better than my 5.9 and 3.73's did. I'm honestly shocked Ram went to 3.73's over the 3.42, especially when I run the numbers on rpms vs speed. IMO they would have been better off offering 3.42's and 4.10's and dropping 3.73 completely.

AH I agree what you are saving about driving empty with TH on, since this 3500 is for the towing big boat always T/H and exhaust brake. When I tow my small boat 2500 is for that T/H and exhaust brake on, once moving down highway i do shutoff on flat ground T/H, thanks for the suggests.

I'm sorry its going in this direction, the sweet spot between economy and power. If you want to drive slow and 1100 RPM at 50 MPH, then 3:42 is your friend. I like 1500 RPM at a minumum, regardles of speed. 1700 - 2100 RPM is the cummins best ecomonmy and performance. If I wanted better milage at the cost of power, then I would have bought a SO CTD. Milage is not why I bought a powerfull engine, sure it can get good milage, but I don't drive at grandpa speeds. I don't have a heavy foot, but when I want power on demand in the lower speed ranges, then 1500 RPM is the lowest RPM I want to run at. AH, we have beaten this to death, you have your opinion and I have mine. I don't pay for your fuel bill, and you don't pay mine. Sorry I'm a little on edge, but not every body likes to drive the same way.
