2019 Regen strategy

Has the 2019 CTD, Diesel Particulate Filter, regeneration strategy changed. My 2019 displayed a message that my truck was in regeneration. Now I know the early 6.7 CTD didn't display any message or give the percentage on a display, and I don't remember a DPF gauge on the 2014 SO CTD I drove for 30K miles. My 2019 HO Laramie has the percentage gauge that I ignored for the most part. I didn't have the DPF gauge displaying that I can remember, but the display read regeneration in progress, or something like that. So I have left the DPF gauge displayed all the time tracking the progress which varies and I have not seen the message since. I'll post the pictures that shows milage and the various levels of the DPF gauge. Because I don't drive it daily, I tend to drive it like a grocery getter, so I take it on 30 to 60 mile drives, at 65 to 75 MPH when I can.

I don't have a 19, but in the threads I read here on the TDR on the same subject, appears to me that new strategy is to keep DPF at low percent blockage versus letting get full or near full, and clearing it. With all the extra HP/TQ, it could load up a little faster. Even my 17 5500 appears to regen fairly often.

Anyhoo, just my opinion. I'm sure others will chime in with their's.

On my 2018 2500 I use the OBDLink app that came with the OBDLink LX blue tooth scanner to monitor DPF percentage, Regen status (active or not) and how many miles between Regen cycles.
90% of the time we are towing a trailer and Regens are occurring every 600 - 650 miles.

In almost 200 miles no regen in progress message has appeared, like the first and only message I have seen. I did get the regen in progress message after towing a 5K lb boat for 150 miles, including a long 12 mile 5% to 6% grade. But under everyone's assumption, that should have passively regenerated with a high EGT, climbing out of that grade.

My 2007 C&C would go into regen, it seems like every 150 miles.

My 2009 4500 didn't go into regen for approximately 8 years.... cuz it wuz deleted. When it wasn't deleted, I could tell by the EGT gauge hitting 1200- 1300, as I recall. On the 4500, I believe it used pressure differentiation to do a regen... basically front pressure sensor detected more pressure than rear one.

Prior to getting my CST2 Edge Monitor, I never knew when my 17 C&C 5500 was/in regen. Since I got a free EGT gauge with my Edge CST2, I'm going to install it when I get my other projects whittled down.

I've read my 2017 should show when it's in regen, but never have seen it. My understanding this is the first year is shows percentage blockage. I'll be the first to say I'm one of the least educated on this, but happy to learn.

Reading up on the manual today, looking for the messages. Indeed it does have the message, "Exhaust System-Regeneration In Process Exhaust filter XX% full", so I guess it does this whenever in regen. So I have no need for the CTS2 then, that'll save me some dollars. When regeneration is completed you get the message "Exhaust system-Regeneration Completed", when its completed you will hear one chime, letting you know its done.

I remember that, and maybe it had something to do with your exhaust under water idling while loading the boat on the trailer. That doin did raise the back pressure and the sensors picked it up.

I believe this is what we saw Ozy. It didn’t last long, I had refueled and displayed the MPG window to for my records and forgot to go back to the regen window. We pulled into a restaurant and I drop DW at the door and parked it, so it idled for a couple of minutes before shutting it down. I noticed a smell from under the truck and didn’t pay much attention to it. After dinner when I started the truck, I noticed it was in the MPG window and opened up the regen window when I saw the message. Which means it was just around 10 miles that it was in regen, I would assume a longer period.

I have seen this message when towing my boat up the Grapevine to San Diego couple of times going down and coming back and I have look at the display as well kind of interesting to see.

My ‘14 only displays the XX% message when in active regen. Nothing is displayed when in passive regen. That’s where the CTS2 comes in to play with the red R light.

Yes that was the message back then, and also lasted from down at the boat launch to up to the little casino at the main highway - around 10 miles or so.

No message on 13-18 when in active regen. Active regen happens regardless of mileage or dpf% at Approximately 24 Engine hr intervals. If there is a message on the EVIC it's because the system hasn't been able to complete the required regen due to short drive cycles, low speed op, or possibly an issue with the system.

I have almost 7,000 miles on my Max Tow 2019, and never seen that message, or the particulate gauge move from 0%. I have a trailer of varying sizes behind it about 85% of the time though.

Yes, that picture was taken when I was descending into Vegas on I-15 south bound. I don't run the EB all the time, I've found it to aggressive when in T/H. I do run T/H all the time, I like the RPM range with the Aisin shifting strategy. With the downshifting strategy of the Aisin in T/H and the EB engaged, its to agressive. I had it on to exercise the EB when descending down the grade.

I had my display in the Regen % window so I could watch the progress of the percentage. I didn't see the message when I had the display in the MPG average window. I'm thinking that you have to be in the DPF % window to see the message. We are all learning the new 2019 CTD, that is why I like TDR. If I were to ask my dealer, or the techs I knew in Norco Ca., that have since retired, I would get IDK. I'll keep an eye on the DPF % window for awhile and report what I see. Hoefler, this truck is not worked like yours, so my short trips are going to effect the DPF differently.
