On my 17 truck I could swear if the key is in the run position but not running that it still counts as idle time. I seem to recall having seen the meter increment twice over the last 100k miles in that situation. I have actually thought about turning it on to run and sitting there to watch it to verify but have decided it is not worth my up to hour of time to test it especially since in the end it doesn't matter that much to me one way or the other. My meter seems to be ok I drive a lot of highway miles and iirc my idle time is well under 10% of total time. Now after reading that some are experiencing time travel with their's I am definitely not going to sit and watch it. I need/want every second I can get on this planet, life can be rough and tough but no need to rush it;).
Also I don't believe my key can be removed if I am not in park. It will shutdown but cant pull the key if not in park.

Did you try jump the grid heater cycle by double press the start button?

pushing the starter button twice allows the truck to start without waiting for a heater grid cycle? never heard of that . all versions?
I didn't know this, wished I had known this with my 07 C&C, It would sit for a couple of weeks, slowly draining the batteries. I would have to charge batts if ambient was low enough to engage the grid heaters. So this morning it was low enough temps to engage the grid heaters, and I tried the doulbe pushing of the start button, yes it does work. I'll probably do this now with our lowest temps at around 28/30* degrees, to save the batteries from the stress. I've always known 28/30* degrees will not effect the starting of our CTD's when at these temps. However, I thought you had to disconnect them physically from the relay. Thats good info Ozzy, thanks.

The 07 could be bypassed simply by turning the key to start with the WTS light on.

Yes, but my volt meter would tell me it was cycling, and it didn't like it with low batteries, especially with the delay in the voltage regulator.

The voltmeter was likely lying to you if was before starting. The voltmeter's were mostly real, but were modified during grid heater operation. My 05 would never swing for the post-heat cycle but dad's 06 did.
