hey folks,

anyone else get this sound? the transfer case shifter makes a buzzing or whirring sound in the cab. the sound increases as more load is applied to the engine/trans/trans case. i can make the sound go away easily by applying light pressure to the shifter and nudging it towards the passenger side.

i can't believe it came from the factory sounding like that. what's worn? some little fiddly bit that holds the shifter in place?

cheers, and may 2005 be your best year yet!

That is a standard feature. Came at no extra charge.

Some feel it is like a Cat purring when you scratch it.

Others don't like it.

1. ignore it.

2. turn up the radio

3. tie a bungie cord to something else to hold it still

4. check underneath and add shims or washers as needed.

Sorry I can't be more help. Mine does it to. I recently rebuilt my transmision and drive shaft and I forgot about it untill you mentions it.

I also siliconed my 4X4 gear indicator back on the top of the knob because it dried out and popped off from vibration and old age.

These old work horses are starting to get Arthritis be gentle. :D

Is that the gated-style shifter? Do both style of shifter make noise.

Mine is gated. I only question the other style, because Advance Adaptes' manual says Dodge used two different styles, gated and non-gated.

Hi Roy,

The 'gate' for the shifter has a nylon horseshoe shaped pad on it. You need to look behind the shifter plate were it rides in it's gate "groove".

The nylon thingy is about 1" long and fits snuggly over the metal plating behind the shifter plate itself.

It wears then starts to allow some wiggling and that creates the rattle in most cases.

I pulled mine off, flipped it around and reinstalled it... . so far no more rattles. .

Other guys have other solutions so I'll let them jump in here... .

pb... .

edit: PS how do you like your new drivetrain... ??? :D

I have not had a problem under the truck yet. My buzzing came from the shifter nob itself. The indicator had come out, and I found the nob was not tight on the insert making a "buzzing" noise. I went and got a cheepie 8 ball handle from orielly's and solved the problem.
