hey folks,

i'm fairly new to the tdr. i have learned tons by reading threads, and now it's my turn to ask questions!

here's the story...

after a little four wheeling, i come to a stop with the engine running. sitting on a flat surface with the foot brake on, i place the transmission (automatic) in neutral. i shift the transfer case from 4H to 2H, and it slips beyond 2H into neutral. so, i go to shift back into to 2H and the t-case grinds :( . i decide to put the transmission in park before attempting anything else and it grinds, too :( !

next, i shut the engine down, place the transmission in park and the transfer case in 2H. no problem.

any ideas? the transmission and transfer case have created no other problems other than when i want to get out of 4H.

cheers,

roy

There is nothing wrong with eather items.

The grinding you heard from the transmission was the parking pawl jumping the teeth. This would be the same as rolling and putting the trans in park. The transmission had no direct link to the rear axle with the transfer case in neutral. So it had no resistance against it and was free spinning.

The grinding in the transfer case was the gearing trying to reengage. When ever you put a 205 into neutral. You need to shut the truck down to stop the trans from free spinning.

All of us $X$ drivers have done this at least once in our life. :-laf

Now I'm wondering if this is a auto 4x4 thing. I've never had problems or grinding like this with my 89 5sp 4x4. Havent 4wheeled with the 91 to tell, but on my 78 auto 4x4 has the 203 case it will do this same thing. I figured something is still spinning and doesnt want to stop, almost like a clutch brake in a big truck. Not saying thats what it is just feels like it from experience. I think what I started doing was just put it in park to begin with then change ranges. Stop changing range or 2-4 etc, in neutral.

You guys need to remember that good old transfer case has no sycros in it. The grinding is normal but i would bet that if you put the truck in neutral and tried to shift it would go but it takes a second for things to stop. This ain't no childs toy you are playing with here its a real piece of equipment that will outlast any of us. ;)

Heck yeah! I love my 205. Just got to work within it's parameters. The only time I ever have the grinding is if while I'm changing positions I stop in neutral. Don't stop in neutral! Neutral isn't a destination, it's a town you drive through! If you stop you have to stay the night!
