So, other than a rock accidentally (cough, cough) hitting my windshield, is there a way to buff out or otherwise eliminate the micro fine scratches caused by windshield wipers and 219,000 miles of of general wear?

I suppose it is the sun angle at this time of year (relative to the time I'm driving most) but they are getting pretty annoying. My otherwise clean windshield is getting nearly impossible to see through at sunrise/sunset.

maybe another rock should accidentally hit your windshield and that way the insurance company could replace it at the accident cost.

Only way is to change it. If you have full coverage with a low deductible windshields are pretty cheap, only costs me $50.

My father was a salesman for 3M's adbrasive division. Years ago my he put together a kit using 3M products. He sold them to the air force to clear up fighter jet canopies. The kit worked on both glass and plastic. In his infinate wisdom, He showed the kit to his bosses at 3M. They told him it would never be a money maker. 6 monthes later, 3M came out with their own kit. Well, that ended that. He couldn't compete with 3M. The point to the story is that, I'm sure 3M still makes a kit for polishing windshields. Whether it is affordable enough to justify use on a windshield or not, I don't know. Pleas let us know your results.

Considering top quality windscreens only cost around $250 (installed), there's really no excuse not to replace it, especially when safety is involved. It is normal wear and tear, after all. I've put two in mine over the past 13 years. And Amica's only involvement was to tell me who they recommend in this area to do the replacement.

Get a quote on a new windshield, tell them your paying cash and it will be 175-300 ish installed. If you tell them insurance is covering it, they'll bill your insurance like $800. 00.

I've replaced a windshield on a Ford truck and my wife car, both were under 200 installed at the house or my office. Its really cheap,

If it is scratches then change it, but if it is water spots and build up use a 0000 steel wool (that is the ultra-fine steel wool) and glass cleaner. It does wonders to our work trucks.

I had a BIG ROCK hit my windshield. The shield cost was $266. 00 my insurance was $100. 00 deductible. I could not believe how clear a new windshield could look. (200K miles of sand blasted window). Replace it

I have bought several windshields for mine due to the "sandblasting" effect at highway speeds and the resulting light display when driving into the sun. I wouldn't waste my time trying to polish glass. As several people have stated they are not that expensive. As a side note, a friend of mine arrived home from the Officers club a little tipsy. When his wife gave him hell he got back into his car to go back to the club. His wife broke his windshield with a broom, she was so mad. He told the truth to his insurance company and they still replaced his windshield:-laf That was quite a few years ago though.

Well, looks like replacement is the best option. I'll start making some calls. I'd like to get this done be the snow flakes start flying (on a more regular basis).

Thanks for the advise.

You'll be happy with a new piece of glass. I used to get new glass annually, lots of chips where I grew up and went to school. Now I have 62K on my OEM glass (102K on my DD glass) and I really want to change it. I am so used to good glass that this couple year old stuff is crappy! Not to mention its super hard on wiper blades.

Remember that the windshield is glued in place, the glue dries out, water leaks? structural integrity, It is time to replace it.
